Where to go at Christmas 2026 in Poland: mountains, spas, Kraków and Wrocław, and what is really open on 24, 25 and 26 December.

Christmas 2026 falls on a Thursday, Friday and Saturday: Christmas Eve (Wigilia) is Thursday 24 December, the first day of Christmas is Friday 25 December and the second is Saturday 26 December. Since 2025, 24 December has been a statutory day off in Poland, so for most people the holidays start already on Thursday, and on Sunday 27 December the shops will be closed anyway. That is enough for a trip, but you need to build it around what is actually open at Christmas.
We have collected nine destinations and ideas: mountains, thermal baths, old towns, trips with children and quiet palaces. The rule is simple. We give opening hours only when they come from an official website or from our own place card (with a verification date, October 2026). As of 25 October most venues had not yet published their Christmas hours, so where they are missing we say so plainly and suggest checking from mid-December.
| Travel style | Destination | What is confirmed | Card |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mountains and walks | Zakopane | the Kasprowy Wierch cable car runs all year; Christmas market until 30 December | Krupówki |
| Mountains, quieter | Karpacz and the Karkonosze | the promenade is open around the clock; Wang church on Christmas Eve 9:00–15:30 | Karpacz promenade |
| Thermal baths | Podhale, Uniejów, Mszczonów, Poznań | regular hours; holiday hours not yet published | Termy Bukovina |
| Old town and nativity scenes | Kraków | szopki exhibition from 9 December; on 26 December 10:00–19:00 | Main Market Square |
| Christmas market over the holidays | Wrocław | market until 7 January; closed 24–25 December, opens 26 December at 13:00 | Wrocław Market Square |
| Sea and museums | Tricity | Gdańsk museums closed 24–26 December; Gdynia Oceanarium open on 26 December | Długa Street |
| With children | zoos and the Exotarium | Wrocław Zoo open 24–26 December; the Exotarium open on 26 December | Wrocław Zoo |
| Quiet and palaces | Oporów, Krzyżtopór, Biskupin | open in winter; 24–25 December varies | Oporów Castle |
| Cheap | Ciechocinek, old towns | graduation towers free from November to March; old towns accessible around the clock | Ciechocinek graduation towers |
Zakopane has announced a Christmas market on Niepodległości Square by Krupówki from 26 November to 30 December 2026, so it covers all three days of Christmas (details in our guide to the Zakopane Christmas market). According to the official website, the Kasprowy Wierch cable car runs about every 10 minutes, or every 30 minutes in poorer weather or low demand. The page describing the cable car gives neither operating hours nor holiday changes, so check them with the operator. In Tatra National Park three trail sections are closed from 1 December to 15 May, so check the park’s notices before setting out.
For the relaxing part of the trip you have four thermal baths. Chochołowskie Termy has, according to our card, pools Sunday to Thursday 9:00–22:00 and Friday and Saturday until 23:00. Termy Bukovina is open daily 9:00–22:00 according to its official website, and Termy Bania also 9:00–22:00 according to our card. Termy Zakopiańskie has, according to its website, a break from 16 November to 7 December and reopens on 8 December; at Christmas it should therefore be open again, but the site gives no holiday hours and the break may change. The websites of Chochołowskie Termy, Termy Zakopiańskie and Bukovina do not yet list hours for 24–26 December. A phone call or e-mail settles it in minutes.
The Karpacz promenade is accessible around the clock, although our card says there may be temporary disruption in 2026 because of redevelopment. The wooden Wang church has a holiday exception in our card: 9:00–15:30 on Christmas Eve. You will have to check the hours for 25 and 26 December on the church’s website, because on Sundays and holidays visiting begins only at 11:30. For skiers: Zieleniec plans its 2026/27 season from around the beginning of December, depending on snow, and the winter timetable of the Kopa chairlift has not been announced yet. If you are heading higher, read the entry on Krkonoše National Park: in winter some trails are closed because of avalanche risk.
The rainy-day plan has to change: according to our cards, the Gerhart Hauptmann House in Jagniątków and the Karkonosze Museum in Jelenia Góra are closed 24–26 December 2026.
At Szczyrk Mountain Resort the dates and hours of the 2026/27 winter season have not been announced yet (as of 10 October), so do not plan a ski day rigidly. What is certain is the promenade along the Żylica, open around the clock all year and, in good conditions, also used by cross-country skiers in winter. It is a calm option for a walk after Christmas Eve dinner or on the second day of Christmas.
Kraków has its own December tradition. The Kraków Nativity Scene Contest takes place on 3 December 2026 at the Adam Mickiewicz monument on the Main Market Square, and according to the Museum of Kraków the post-contest exhibition runs from 9 December 2026 to 28 February 2027. On the Krzysztofory Palace page, hours for the szopki exhibition are given for only two days: 26 December 10:00–19:00 and 31 December 9:00–15:00. The same branch is closed on 24 and 25 December. The second day of Christmas is therefore a good day for the szopki.
Much of Kraków’s programme drops out on Christmas Eve and the first day of Christmas. According to our cards, the Wawel Cathedral, the Schindler’s Factory and the Wieliczka Salt Mine are closed on 24 and 25 December. The page of the Wawel Royal Castle gives December hours of Tuesday to Sunday 9:00–17:00 but does not mention the holidays, so call before you go. The market on the Main Market Square starts on 27 November and ends on 3 or 6 January; the organiser has not yet given holiday hours (Kraków Christmas market). For the old town, a walk through the Old Town is enough.
The Wrocław Christmas market has announced dates of 20 November 2026 to 7 January 2027 and, according to the organiser, is closed on 24 and 25 December and opens at 13:00 on 26 December (Wrocław Christmas market). The Market Square is best on the afternoon of the second day of Christmas, and before that you can visit the zoo. According to its website, Wrocław Zoo is open every day, including holidays: from November to December the grounds and the Afrykarium are open 9:00–16:00 (ticket offices until 15:00), except on 24 and 31 December, when they close at 14:00 (ticket offices at 13:00). The Japanese Garden is closed from November to March. Hydropolis has regular hours in our card, with no information about the holidays.
The Gdańsk Christmas market ends on 23 December, so it is no argument for a Christmas trip (Gdańsk Christmas market). The city museums will not be waiting for guests: the Amber Museum, the Uphagen House and the Artus Court are closed 24–26 December according to our cards. What remains is a walk along Długa Street and the Long Market, a visit to Oliwa Cathedral (the church is open outside Masses, but there are no organ presentations from 23 December to 1 January) and the zoo in Oliwa, which according to its card is open daily all year, with ticket office until 14:00 and visiting until 15:00 from November. The Gdynia Oceanarium is closed on 24 and 25 December, so Saturday 26 December is the day to visit (10:00–17:00 in winter).
If you do not want to go to the mountains, thermal baths are the simplest answer for Christmas. According to its official website, Termy Uniejów has pools open daily 10:00–22:00, with the sauna zone from 16:00 on weekdays. Since 29 September 2026 the paddling pool with the castle and the Banan basin have been on their autumn–winter break, which matters for families. Termy Mszczonów is open daily 9:00–21:00 according to our card, and Termy Maltańskie in Poznań has its aquapark open 9:00–23:00. The Uniejów website gives no hours for 24–26 December, so ask by e-mail or phone, especially about Christmas Eve.
In winter palaces and castles often keep shorter hours, and their schedule depends on the day. Oporów Castle is open daily 10:00–16:00, also in winter 2026/27, but closed on 24 and 25 December, so choose the 26th. Krzyżtopór is open from November to February 8:00–16:00 and closed on 24–25 December. Biskupin is closed only on 25 December and open 9:00–16:00 from November to March. The Rogalin Picture Gallery is closed 24–26 December, and Kórnik Castle has a seasonal break from 14 December 2026 to 14 February 2027, so it is not an option at Christmas.
For families: the zoo in Zamość is closed only on 25 December and 1 January (ticket offices from November to February 9:00–15:00). The Exotarium in Sosnowiec is closed 24–25 December but open 9:00–19:00 on Saturday 26 December. Srebrna Góra Fortress and the Walim Riese Tunnels are closed 24–25 December, which leaves the second day of Christmas. Fort Zachodni in Świnoujście is open daily all year, in winter 10:00–16:00 depending on the weather. Do not, however, plan learning through play at the Copernicus Science Centre, which is closed 24–26 December, or at EC1 Łódź (24–26 December). Ideas for a later trip are in our text on the 2027 winter holidays.
Cheap: the graduation towers in Ciechocinek are free from November to March (they are switched on in favourable weather). The old towns of Sandomierz, Kazimierz Dolny and Toruń have hours of 0:00–24:00 in our cards, so a walk costs only the journey. A day on the promenade in Karpacz or Szczyrk costs nothing either.
| Day | Usually open | Closed according to our cards and websites | Shopping and transport |
|---|---|---|---|
| Thursday 24 Dec (Christmas Eve) | Wrocław Zoo until 14:00, Wang church until 15:30, Biskupin, Fort Zachodni, old towns | Wawel (cathedral), Wieliczka, Schindler’s Factory, Krzysztofory, Gdynia Oceanarium, Exotarium, Oporów, Krzyżtopór, Copernicus Centre, Gdańsk museums, Wrocław market | shops closed, with exceptions; timetables to be checked |
| Friday 25 Dec | Wrocław Zoo, Gdańsk Zoo, Fort Zachodni, old towns | Biskupin, Zamość Zoo, Wieliczka, Wawel (cathedral), Oporów, Krzyżtopór, Exotarium, Gdynia Oceanarium, Krzysztofory, Wrocław market | public holiday, shops closed |
| Saturday 26 Dec | szopki at Krzysztofory 10:00–19:00, Oporów, Krzyżtopór, Biskupin, Exotarium, Gdynia Oceanarium, Wrocław Zoo, Zamość Zoo, Wrocław market from 13:00 | Gdańsk museums, Copernicus Centre, EC1, Rogalin, Hauptmann House, Karkonosze Museum | public holiday, shops closed; 27 Dec is a non-trading Sunday |
The table is based on our cards (checked on 7–22 October 2026) and on the official websites we read on 25 October. Venues whose card does not list a given day among the closures are shown as usually open, but check their website before you go. Organisers often change the holiday hours of Christmas markets, so check those again before leaving.
Since 2025, Christmas Eve has been a day off from work, and according to the National Labour Inspectorate retail trade is restricted, with a list of exceptions (petrol stations, pharmacies, flower shops, bakeries, catering, online shops). Older sources speak of a ban only after 14:00, so do your shopping on Wednesday 23 December. On 25 and 26 December shops are closed.
There are no Christmas 2026 timetables yet. Operators usually publish them in the second half of December. PKP Intercity announces extra carriages at that time. In some cities in earlier years a Sunday timetable applied on Christmas Eve, or services ended in the early evening (as in Piotrków Trybunalski in 2025), so check your return times before you book accommodation.
Usually not. According to our cards, closed on 25 December are, among others, Wieliczka, Wawel Cathedral, Schindler’s Factory, Oporów, Krzyżtopór and the Exotarium. Exceptions are zoos and year-round venues such as Wrocław Zoo and Fort Zachodni in Świnoujście. More places open on 26 December.
Most reliably to a zoo (Wrocław, Gdańsk, Zamość), or to the Exotarium in Sosnowiec or the Oceanarium in Gdynia on the second day of Christmas. If you prefer the mountains, combine a thermal bath with a short walk along Krupówki. Check the hours for 24–26 December before you go.
Choose a town where a walk is enough: Sandomierz, Kazimierz Dolny, Toruń or Karpacz. In Ciechocinek the graduation towers are free from November to March. Keep paid attractions for 26 December, when the most places open.
Some do, but not all. The Gdańsk market ends on 23 December, and the Wrocław one is closed on 24 and 25 December and opens at 13:00 on 26 December. Zakopane runs until 30 December, Kraków until 3 or 6 January and Katowice until 10 January, but their holiday hours are not yet known. According to our guide, the Warsaw Christmas market has a break on Christmas Eve, but the organiser’s website still shows dates from the previous season. You will find the full list in our guide to the 2026 Christmas markets.
