Gdańsk Christmas Market 2026 runs from Friday 20 November to Wednesday 23 December. As usual, its heart is Targ Węglowy (Coal Market), but stalls also spread along the Royal Route, Bogusławskiego Street by the Shakespeare Theatre, the Forum Gdańsk courtyard, Tkacka Street and inside the Great Armoury. The organiser, Gdańsk International Fair (MTG), points out that in 2024 the market won first place in the Best Christmas Markets vote run by European Best Destinations, with 92,000 votes.
This guide covers the official 2026 opening hours, a map of all six zones, how to get there from the airport, paying in złoty, the best time to visit and what to see in the Main Town nearby. Note that the market closes before Christmas Eve – if you're travelling after 24 December, compare other cities in our guide to Christmas markets in Poland 2026.

Gdańsk's market is a chain of connected zones forming a festive trail from Targ Węglowy to the Highland Gate and beyond. Each has its own character, so it's worth walking them all.
Targ Węglowy is the hub: the most food and drink huts, local products, crafts and a stage with concerts and activities for kids. In 2025 the stage ran themed days – Insta Mondays, Theatre Tuesdays, Talent Wednesdays, Family Thursdays and Music Fridays – with a Santa's throne for photos. From here, stalls line the Royal Route from the Highland Gate to the Golden Gate, where Długa Street – the grand main street of the old town – begins.
For gifts, head inside the Great Armoury, a Renaissance arsenal that hosts the arts and crafts hall. In 2025 it held 62 craft stalls, a gift-ideas showcase, a Christmas chamber with photo spots, an art café with board games and workshops. It's also the best place to warm up. Tkacka Street, leading from the Armoury towards St Mary's Church, is another market zone.
Along the Shakespeare Theatre, the 2026 plan includes a crafts zone, a food zone and an Advent Gate. In 2025 this was where Lucek the talking moose – the market's much-loved mascot – chatted with passers-by, and 5-metre angels stood in the park behind Zbytki Street, next to a fairground zone with a carousel, Santa's sleigh and a spinning coaster.
Expect mulled wine, hot chocolate, pierogi (Polish dumplings), grilled food, sweets and gingerbread, plus regional produce. Hot drinks are served in deposit mugs that you return at collection points for a refund. The organiser also sells collectible market mugs (this year in winter blue, caramel brown, chocolate brown and snow white) at the Gdańsk Tourist Organisation stall and online. No 2026 food or drink prices have been published.
The market is part of the wider Gdańsk Illuminations project, with festive lights in places such as Targ Węglowy, Oliwa Park, the Green Bridge, the Brzeźno seaside promenade and Heweliusz Square – the park on Zbytki Street being the newest spot. The market even has its own bugle call, first played by Music Academy students at the 2023 opening ceremony.
The map shows all six zones of the 2026 market, as listed by the organiser. They're close together: you can walk from Forum Gdańsk to the Armoury in about 15 minutes, not counting stops at the huts.

Gift idea: design a personalised Gdańsk map poster, mark the Long Market or your favourite beach with a heart and get a print-ready PDF straight away.
You'll pay in złoty (zł, PLN) – euros won't work at the huts. According to the organiser, payment methods depend on each stall, but many accept cards; there's an ATM on Targ Węglowy at the corner of the Torture House. Carry some coins and small notes for snacks and the mug deposit. Turn down any offer to be charged in your home currency and pick PLN; that dynamic conversion costs more.
From Gdańsk Lech Wałęsa Airport, take the PKM train to Gdańsk Wrzeszcz and change to the SKM commuter train to Gdańsk Śródmieście, right next to Forum Gdańsk and the market; the journey takes roughly 30–40 minutes. City bus 210 also runs from the airport to the centre, and a taxi takes about 25 minutes. From Gdańsk Główny railway station it's a 10-minute walk to Targ Węglowy. If you're coming from Scandinavia, the organiser promotes travelling to the market by Polferries ferry.
The market opens at 12:00, so there is no quiet morning slot. It's least crowded Monday to Thursday between 12:00 and 15:00. The lights look best after dark – in December it gets dark in Gdańsk around 15:30, so even on a weekday you'll see the illuminations before closing at 20:00. Friday and Saturday evenings (open until 21:00) are the busiest. Remember: the market ends on 23 December and is not open over Christmas.
The SKM commuter train runs frequently, including in the evening, and links Gdańsk with Sopot and Gdynia. If you're driving, the market has no car park of its own, but the organiser lists several nearby commercial ones, including the European Solidarity Centre (pl. Solidarności 1, 6:00–22:00), Jana z Kolna 5 and the multi-storey car park on Okopowa Street (378 spaces). Most are open 24/7; owners set the prices.
Families will enjoy the stage (Family Thursdays, if the 2025 format returns), the rides and the workshops in the Armoury. With a buggy, weekdays are much easier – Tkacka Street and the Royal Route get congested at weekends. According to the organiser, the market is adapted for disabled visitors; see the accessibility page. Nearby car parks have accessible spaces (8 at the ECS, 15 on Okopowa Street).
Start at noon in the Armoury and on Tkacka Street while it's quiet, then have lunch on Targ Węglowy. Around 14:00, walk through the Golden Gate down Długa Street to the Long Market, pop into Artus Court or St Mary's Church and continue to the medieval Crane on the Motława river. Come back after dark, when the market is at its prettiest, and finish at the Advent Gate on Bogusławskiego Street.
December is quieter than summer, but market weekends fill Main Town hotels fast. Good alternatives are the Lower Town, Granary Island or Wrzeszcz, a few minutes away by SKM.
The market sits right on the route of our audio guide “Gdańsk: from the Golden Gate to the Shipyard Gate” – 13 stops over 3.8 km from the Royal Way to Solidarity Square, with the first two free to try. More ideas: things to do in Gdańsk.
