Zakopane's Christmas market starts much earlier this year than last: the town has announced dates of 26 November to 30 December 2026. The festive huts will stand on Plac Niepodległości (Independence Square) right by Krupówki Street, a few minutes' walk from Równia Krupowa. That's a big change from last season, when the market only opened on 12 December – in 2026 it runs through the whole of Advent, so you can have grilled oscypek and mulled wine below Giewont from the last weekend of November.
The organisers will publish the 2026 programme and hours later. This guide combines what's confirmed with what the 2025/26 market looked like, plus practical tips: how to avoid traffic jams, where to park, what to do in Zakopane in December and how New Year's Eve worked on Równia Krupowa. All Polish markets with dates are in our guide to Christmas markets in Poland 2026.

We checked the dates on the official town website (zakopane.pl) on 16 October 2026. The town says the detailed programme and attractions will follow later; we'll update this guide then.
Zakopane's market is small – just over 20 stalls in 2025/26 – but it has a backdrop no other Polish city can match: on a clear day the Tatra peaks rise behind the huts. Plac Niepodległości sits right by Krupówki in the heart of town, so the market is a natural start or finish for a stroll along the main promenade.
The stalls focus on regional produce, handicrafts and decorations; the town's announcement for last season promised mulled wine, oscypek and sweet highland treats. Don't miss grilled oscypek with cranberry jam. If you want to take real oscypek home, ask about its protected-origin label and what milk it's made from: traditional oscypek uses sheep's milk, and the sheep graze from spring to autumn. Good souvenirs include wooden ornaments, woollen socks and slippers, and pieces inspired by the Zakopane style.
Last season the square had light displays, a Christmas tree and an illuminated carousel, the main draw for children. There was also a full programme: folk bands Kapela Huzary and Kapela Dziewięćsił, the band Passport Control, a school nativity play, carol singing, a knights' re-enactment and a stop by Radio ZET's Christmas convoy. Whether similar acts return in 2026 will be clear once the programme is out.

Zakopane's festive mood goes beyond the market. Krupówki, more than a kilometre of pedestrian street climbing uphill from the junction with Nowotarska and Kościeliska streets, gets Christmas lights in December, and its shops, inns and oscypek kiosks stay open into the evening. If you dislike crowds, walk it on a weekday morning before the coach groups arrive.
Right next to the market lies Równia Krupowa, a large open space between Krupówki and Kościuszki Street used mainly for big outdoor events. The 2025 New Year's Eve concert, run by the town and the Zakopane Culture Centre with radio station Złote Przeboje, took place on the upper part of Równia Krupowa: gates opened at 18:00, local folk groups played at 18:45 and the concert began at 19:00. The town reminded visitors that trading is banned on both the upper and lower Równia Krupowa outside a designated commercial zone, and that fireworks are prohibited in public places in Zakopane – the town doesn't stage a display itself. There's no information on New Year's Eve 2026 yet; we'll add it when it appears.
The map shows the market on Plac Niepodległości and the upper Równia Krupowa, where the New Year's Eve concert was held. They're only a few minutes' walk apart.
Gift idea: for someone who returns to the Tatras every year, a Zakopane map poster with a heart on a favourite mountain hut or on Krupówki beats a souvenir axe. The print-ready PDF downloads instantly.
The quietest time will be late November and early December on weekdays – in 2026 the market opens on 26 November, before the ski season and the Christmas rush. December weekends and the days between Christmas and New Year are peak season in Zakopane: the access roads clog up and it's hard to get a table on Krupówki. The market closes on 30 December, so there are no stalls on New Year's Eve or New Year's Day. Dusk falls around 15:45 in December; arrive an hour earlier to watch the lights come on.
You can reach Zakopane from Kraków by train or bus; journey times depend on traffic on the main road, which can add a lot on December weekends. The railway and bus stations are next to each other on Kościuszki Street, 10–15 minutes' walk from Plac Niepodległości. In peak season the train is a good choice precisely because it avoids the road jams.
Central Zakopane is a paid parking zone and spaces are very hard to find on December weekends. In 2025/26 the town recommended the Park & Ride car park at ul. Chramcówki 35 (entrance from ul. Smrekowa, 140 spaces; 12 PLN per day on New Year's Eve 2025), close to the stations and the centre. Winter tyres are strongly recommended – roads in the Podhale region can be icy.
The carousel, tree and lights on Plac Niepodległości make a good stop with children, and warm cafés along Krupówki are close by if it's freezing. For a longer evening, book a horse-drawn sleigh ride (kulig) with torches and a bonfire. We found no rules on dogs at the market; in peak season Krupówki can be so crowded that mornings are better with a dog.
Book well ahead for December weekends and especially for Christmas and New Year. If you want peace and quiet, look for guesthouses a little away from Krupówki – you'll still reach the market in a quarter of an hour.
December in the Tatras is full winter. If you combine the market with a hike, check the TOPR avalanche bulletin and the forecast, carry microspikes or crampons and don't head higher without winter experience. Valley trails such as the Strążyska Valley are a safer option for a short walk before the market.
More winter ideas: things to do in Zakopane. For a long weekend, pair Zakopane with the Kraków Christmas Market on the Main Square, which opens on 27 November.
From 26 November to 30 December 2026, as announced by Zakopane Town Hall.
On Plac Niepodległości right by Krupówki Street, a few minutes from Równia Krupowa.
The 2026 hours haven't been published. In 2025/26 the market opened daily at 11:00; we'll add closing times once the town announces them.
No – the 2025 event was unticketed and nothing suggests a change.
The organisers don't publish prices and each stall sets its own. We'll add them if official prices appear.
We found no ban. The square and Krupówki get very busy at weekends, so a weekday morning is best with a dog.
No – the last day is 30 December. On New Year's Eve 2025 the town held a concert on the upper Równia Krupowa; plans for 2026 haven't been announced.
