Zakopane, Lesser Poland
The Tatra Museum (Muzeum Tatrzańskie) in Zakopane is the best place to understand Poland's favorite mountain town before you head into the hills. Its main building on Krupówki (kroo-POOF-kee), the town's busy pedestrian street, tells the story of the Górale highlanders, the Tatra Mountains and the "Zakopane style" of architecture in one compact, modern exhibition. It is also the perfect rainy-day plan in a destination where the weather changes fast.
Zakopane (zah-ko-PAH-neh) sits in the far south of Poland, right below the Tatra Mountains on the Slovak border, roughly 100 km (60 miles) south of Kraków. Most visitors come by bus or car from Kraków, which has the nearest major international airport. The museum's main building stands at Krupówki 10, at the lower end of the pedestrian street, about 1 km on foot from the bus and train stations.
The museum was founded in 1889 by a society of Tatra enthusiasts and is named after Dr. Tytus Chałubiński, the physician who popularized Zakopane as a health resort and donated its first collections — rocks and a herbarium of mosses. It was a grassroots project without state funding, which is why it started in a rented highlander house.
The current building is a landmark in its own right. The façade was sketched in 1913 by Stanisław Witkiewicz, the creator of the Zakopane style, with technical plans by Franciszek Mączyński. Construction dragged on through World War I and the museum opened to visitors in 1922. It is one of the very few masonry buildings in this mostly wooden style: look for the stone base, light plaster walls and steep gable. After a major conservation project it reopened in 2022, and since 2021 the museum has had national-museum status, co-run by the Polish Ministry of Culture.
The permanent exhibition, called "Spotkanie" ("Encounter"), blends history, folk culture and nature:
Temporary shows add variety. "Underground" runs until February 28, 2027. Photos of the current exhibition show at least some panels with English translations, and an audio guide is available for 5 PLN — ask at the desk which languages are offered.
Plan 1.5 to 2 hours. Yes, it is worth it — especially on your first day, because everything you see later in town (wooden villas, carved churches, highland music, oscypek cheese stalls) makes more sense afterward. Families usually enjoy the mounted animals and the cottage interior.
Note that the museum does not sell tickets online and does not take bookings for individual visitors: entry is first come, first served. During Polish winter school holidays (January–February) and long weekends, arrive at opening time. Guided tours must be arranged in advance by email.
As of October 2026, according to the museum's website:
Prices are in Polish złoty (PLN); Poland does not use the euro. The website lists no separate winter schedule and no holiday closures, so check before visiting around Christmas (December 24–26), New Year and January 6.
From Kraków, buses and cars take roughly two hours depending on traffic on the busy "Zakopianka" road. Once in Zakopane you will not need a car to reach the museum: it is a short walk from the stations. The museum has no parking of its own listed on its site, so leave your car at your accommodation or in a paid lot in the center.
Stroll the length of Krupówki toward the Gubałówka funicular, or turn onto Kościeliska Street for the Old Church and the historic Pęksowy Brzyzek cemetery, where many Polish artists and mountaineers are buried. Architecture fans should also visit Villa Koliba, the first Zakopane-style house and now the museum's branch dedicated to the style.
