Kraków's Christmas Market is due to open on the Main Market Square (Rynek Główny) on 27 November 2026. The organiser, ARTIM, acting for the Kraków Merchants' Congregation, gave exhibitors a window of “27 November 2026 to 3 January 2027 or to 6 January 2027”, while its offer for Kraków City Card holders lists 27 November 2026 – 6 January 2027. We'll confirm the closing date as soon as it is announced. Either way, the huts stand right in the heart of the Old Town, between the Cloth Hall, St Mary's Basilica and the Town Hall Tower.
Below you'll find what's already known about the 2026 edition, what to eat and buy, how to pay, how to get there from the airport, the best time to visit and what to see around the square – including our English-language audio guide along the Royal Route. For dates in other cities, see Christmas markets in Poland 2026.

Few Christmas markets have a setting like this one. The wooden stalls sit on the square between the Renaissance Cloth Hall and St Mary's Basilica, the bugle call (hejnał) sounds from the church tower every hour, and a huge Christmas tree lights up the square in the evening. The organiser leans on tradition: the Rynek has been a trading place since the Middle Ages.
Trade on the Main Market Square goes back more than seven centuries, and today's Christmas market deliberately echoes the fairs held here for generations. The organiser points out that CNN Travel named Kraków the best place to spend Christmas in 2012, recommending the nativity scene contest and the market, and that Elle magazine listed it among the ten most beautiful Christmas markets in Europe in 2014.
According to the organiser, stalls sell hand-painted glass baubles and tree ornaments, Christmas wreaths, ceramics, wooden toys and decorations, woollen goods, art glass, jewellery, souvenirs, postcards and calendars. Polish-made products and handicrafts are preferred, so it's a good place to buy an ornament that didn't come off a factory line.
Food is mostly grilled dishes and local specialities. The organiser highlights oscypek – smoked sheep's-milk cheese from the Tatra Mountains, grilled and served with cranberry – Galician mulled wine, caramelised roasted nuts, chocolate and marzipan treats and traditional gingerbread. No 2026 prices have been published, so we don't quote any.
The market comes with performances by regional groups. Past programmes included a carol singers' parade, folk rituals and showcases of towns and villages from the Małopolska region. Expect carols and highland songs rather than pop Christmas hits.
December in Kraków also means szopki – glittering, tower-like nativity scenes modelled on the city's churches. The tradition has been on UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity since 2018. Traditionally, on the first Thursday of December the makers display their work by the Adam Mickiewicz monument on the square, and the best entries go on show at the Museum of Kraków. In 2026 the first Thursday of December falls on 3 December; the museum will confirm the date.

Gift idea: instead of another fridge magnet, design a personalised Kraków map poster, mark the square with a heart and download a print-ready PDF.
Poland's currency is the złoty (zł, PLN); the euro is not accepted at most stalls. Cards and contactless payments are common, but keep some small change for snacks and the carousel. When a terminal or ATM offers to charge you in your home currency, pick PLN – dynamic currency conversion usually costs more. Avoid stand-alone cash machines with high fees and use bank ATMs instead.
Kraków Airport (Balice) has a direct train to Kraków Główny station that takes around 20 minutes; buy the ticket from the machine on the platform or on board. From the station, walk 10–15 minutes through the Planty park and along Floriańska Street to the square. Taxis and ride-hailing apps are widely used too; in the evening the drive takes about 25–30 minutes.
December is peak season in Kraków. The quietest time is weekday mornings; the prettiest is after dark (around 15:40 in December). Skip Saturday evenings and the week before Christmas if you dislike crowds. A good compromise is Tuesday or Wednesday at about 16:00, once the lights are on and the coach groups have gone.
Start at the Barbican and St Florian's Gate, walk down Floriańska Street to the market, listen to the bugle call on the hour, step inside St Mary's Basilica, then follow Grodzka Street to Wawel Castle. That's exactly the route of our “Kraków: Market Square and Wawel” audio guide – 15 stops, about 2.9 km and 105 minutes, available in English.
The market is a good excuse to stay longer. On day one, combine the square with Wawel and the Royal Route, then come back to the market after dark. On day two, explore Kazimierz – the former Jewish quarter with its synagogues, galleries and cosy cafés is perfect for a winter afternoon – or cross the Bernatka footbridge to Podgórze. If you like 20th-century architecture, set aside a few hours for Nowa Huta, the socialist-realist district east of the centre.
The most Kraków-style souvenirs from the December market are a hand-painted glass bauble, ceramics, a wooden toy or gingerbread in a decorated tin. If you're buying crafts, ask where they were made – many stallholders are local makers who enjoy talking about their work. Ask for glass ornaments to be wrapped in paper or bubble wrap, as breakages are easy in a crowd. Roasted nuts and gingerbread travel well; oscypek is best eaten on the spot.
December in Kraków is often damp and around freezing, and standing on the stone square in a food queue chills your feet fast. Warm waterproof shoes, a hat and touchscreen-friendly gloves make a real difference – especially if you're listening to an audio guide on your phone along the way.
The Old Town is largely car-free and the whole centre is a paid parking zone; use a park-and-ride or a multi-storey car park outside the Planty ring and walk in. The square is flat, but crowded between the stalls on weekend evenings, so come early with a buggy. The organiser hasn't published rules on dogs or accessibility for 2026; choose quieter hours if you bring a dog.
Old Town and Kazimierz hotels book up early for December weekends. For better value, look at Kleparz, Grzegórzki or Podgórze, a short tram ride from the square.

According to the organiser, on 27 November 2026.
The organiser mentions 3 or 6 January 2027; the Kraków City Card offer lists 6 January. We'll confirm when the final date is announced.
Not yet published for 2026. We'll add them as soon as the organiser does.
Yes. You only pay for food, shopping and the carousel.
There's no 2026 price list yet, and prices can differ from stall to stall around the Cloth Hall. We'll add figures once they're published.
The organiser hasn't published specific rules. The square gets very crowded at peak times, so a weekday morning is the best choice with a dog.
