Kraków Christmas Market

The Kraków Christmas Market 2026 opens on the Main Market Square on 27 November 2026 and runs until 6 January 2027. Wooden stalls go up between the Cloth Hall, St Mary's Basilica and the Mickiewicz Monument, and Galician mulled wine is poured from big barrels. In 2016 CNN named it one of the 10 best Christmas markets in the world, and the British newspaper The Guardian listed it among Europe's most interesting places to visit over the winter holidays.

• Dates: 27 November 2026 – 6 January 2027. In its call for traders the organiser also allowed for a 3 January close, so if you are coming in early January, check the date just before you travel.
• Opening hours: stalls usually 10:00–20:00, some food stands later. The organiser has not yet published official hours or holiday exceptions for 2026/2027.
• Location: Main Market Square (Rynek Główny), Old Town, around the Cloth Hall.
• Entry: free – you only pay for food, shopping and the carousel.
• Getting there: 10–15 minutes on foot from Kraków Główny station; by tram to the stops around the Planty park.
• Organiser: ARTIM sp. z o.o. on behalf of the Kraków Merchants' Congregation.

What to buy and taste

Traders from Poland and also from Lithuania, Ukraine, Slovakia and Hungary sell hand-painted baubles, Christmas decorations, wreaths, ceramics, goods made of wood, wool and felted cloth, art glass and jewellery. The organiser favours Polish products, especially handicrafts, so this is a good place to find a bauble that did not come from a chain store. The food stalls offer cured meats, cheeses, breads and grilled dishes, including oscypek – smoked highland sheep's cheese – grilled and served with cranberries. For something sweet there are caramelised nuts, roasted chestnuts, gingerbread and chocolate and marzipan treats. The market's signature drink is grzaniec galicyjski, mulled wine poured from barrels. The organiser does not publish a price list for 2026.

Events, nativity cribs and discounts

A stage programme accompanies the market: the Korowód Kolędniczy carol-singers' parade, the Dziady folk ritual, presentations by towns of the Małopolska region and Christmas wafer-sharing gatherings. The organiser focuses on amateur folk groups and children's and youth ensembles. The detailed 2026/2027 programme has not been announced yet.

December in Kraków also means Kraków szopki, the glittering nativity cribs inscribed on UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The szopki contest is traditionally held on the first Thursday of December at the Mickiewicz Monument, right next to the stalls; in 2026 that falls on 3 December, and the exact date is confirmed by the Museum of Kraków. Holders of the Kraków Card (Karta Krakowska, the residents' card) get 20% off food and drink (excluding alcohol) at the market stalls, and children covered by the card can ride the carousel for PLN 5.

Getting there and parking

From Kraków Główny station and the Galeria Krakowska mall you can walk to the square in 10–15 minutes, through the Planty park, St Florian's Gate and Floriańska Street. Trams stop around the Planty, for example at Teatr Bagatela, Stary Kleparz, Plac Wszystkich Świętych and Poczta Główna, a few minutes' walk from the square. The Old Town is largely closed to traffic and the whole centre is a paid parking zone. It is best to leave the car at a park-and-ride or a paid car park outside the Planty.

Tripto tip

The busiest times are weekend afternoons and after dark, which falls at around 15:40 in December. To choose presents in peace, come on a weekday morning and return in the evening for mulled wine and the lights. An hour is enough for the market itself; combine it with the Cloth Hall, St Mary's Basilica and the Town Hall Tower, which surround the stalls. The square is level, but between the stalls it gets crowded on weekend evenings, so come before noon with a pushchair.
