The Town Hall Tower in Kraków (Polish: Wieża Ratuszowa, "VYEH-zhah rah-too-SHOH-vah") is the Gothic tower rising from the Main Market Square – the only part of the medieval town hall that survived its demolition in the 19th century. About 70 meters (230 ft) tall, it offers views over St. Mary's Basilica, the Cloth Hall and toward Wawel Castle. Today it is a branch of the Museum of Kraków and one of the quickest, most rewarding things to do on the square.
A town hall stood on the Market Square by the 14th century. The present tower was built in the early 15th century, no later than 1444; records show a stonemason, Jan of Toruń, working on it in 1434. A clock brought from Nuremberg was installed in 1524. On 24 May 1680 lightning set the tower on fire, destroying its spire and clock and melting the bell. A buttress was added on the west side, and royal architect Piotr Beber raised the tower in 1683–1686, giving it a new Baroque spire.
The town hall itself was less lucky. Demolition began in 1820, cracks in the walls led to the loss of the whole building, and only the tower was left standing. A proposal to demolish the tower as well was never carried out. Since 2000 the clock has been synchronized by the DCF77 radio time signal, keeping atomic-clock accuracy.
Yes, if you want a quick, inexpensive view over the square – plan about 45 minutes. The narrow, steep stairs make it unsuitable for wheelchairs and strollers, and anyone with mobility issues or a fear of heights should think twice. Kids who like climbing usually love it.
The tower stands in the western half of the Main Market Square, between the Cloth Hall and the end of Szewska Street. It is about 15 minutes on foot from Kraków Główny station (which has a train link to Kraków Airport) and about 10 minutes from Wawel along the Royal Route via Grodzka Street. The Old Town has restricted traffic, so walk.
