Kraków Main Square

Kraków's Main Market Square (Rynek Główny, say: RIH-nek GWOO-vnih) is the heart of the Old Town and one of the largest medieval town squares in Europe – roughly 200 by 200 meters, about 10 acres, laid out when Kraków received its town charter in 1257. Ringed by elegant townhouses and anchored by the Renaissance Cloth Hall and the twin towers of St. Mary's Basilica, it is the obvious starting point for things to do in Kraków and part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Where it is and how to get there

Kraków lies in southern Poland, about 2.5 hours from Warsaw by express train. The square is a pedestrian zone in the middle of the Old Town: from Kraków Główny railway station it is a 10–15 minute walk through the Planty park ring and down Floriańska Street. Kraków Airport (Balice) is about 15 km (9 miles) west of the center, with a direct train to Kraków Główny. Many visitors also base themselves here for day trips to Auschwitz-Birkenau and the Wieliczka Salt Mine.

What to see on the square

• The Cloth Hall (Sukiennice) – a Renaissance market hall with souvenir stalls downstairs and a gallery of 19th-century Polish art upstairs,
• St. Mary's Basilica – a Gothic church with a famous carved altarpiece by Veit Stoss; every hour a trumpeter plays the hejnał from the taller tower, breaking off mid-tune,
• The Town Hall Tower – all that remains of the town hall demolished in the 19th century,
• St. Adalbert's Church – a tiny church older than the square's layout,
• The Adam Mickiewicz Monument – a tribute to Poland's national poet and a classic meeting point,
• Eros Bendato – Igor Mitoraj's giant bronze head, a favorite photo spot.

Below the paving, the Rynek Underground museum (opened in 2010) reveals medieval layers of the city.

A short history

The square has hosted royal ceremonies, markets and protests for centuries. In 1525 Albert of Prussia paid homage to the Polish king here – a scene famously painted by Jan Matejko. On March 24, 1794, Tadeusz Kościuszko, who had earlier fought in the American Revolutionary War, swore an oath here launching an uprising against Russia and Prussia; a plaque in the paving marks the spot. In 1978, Kraków's historic center was among the very first sites inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Tips for your visit

Is it worth visiting? Absolutely – and it is free. The square is open around the clock; museums, towers and the basilica have their own opening hours and tickets (as of October 2026, check each institution's website before you go). Come early in the morning for quiet photos, and return after dark when the Cloth Hall is lit up. Allow at least an hour for a loop of the square, or half a day with the basilica, the tower and the underground museum. Restaurant terraces on the square charge a premium; side streets are usually cheaper. Prices are in Polish złoty (PLN), and cards are widely accepted. The square is flat but cobbled, which is fine for strollers.

Nearby

The Royal Route runs through the square: north along Floriańska Street to St. Florian's Gate and the Barbican, south along Grodzka Street to Wawel Castle. The Small Market Square lies just behind St. Mary's, and the Jagiellonian University's Collegium Maius is a few minutes' walk west.

Christmas market 2026

The Christmas market on the Main Market Square is planned to open on 27 November 2026 and to close on 3 or 6 January 2027; the organiser has not confirmed the end date yet. Opening hours for 2026 have not been published. Details are on our page Kraków Christmas Market.
