Wawel Cathedral

Wawel Cathedral, formally the Royal Cathedral Basilica of Saints Stanislaus and Wenceslaus, is one of Kraków’s most important landmarks and one of the key sites in Polish history. It was the coronation and burial church of Polish rulers and is associated with many leading figures of the country’s past. A visit combines Gothic architecture with chapels, the Sigismund Bell, the Royal Tombs and the Cathedral Museum.

What to see

The interior contains a group of chapels, including the Renaissance Sigismund Chapel with its dome and Jagiellonian tombs. The tower houses the Sigismund Bell, rung on the most important occasions. Below the cathedral are the Royal Tombs and the graves of, among others, Adam Mickiewicz, Juliusz Słowacki, Józef Piłsudski and Lech Kaczyński.

Visiting and tickets

A cathedral ticket may include the church, the Sigismund Bell tower, the crypts and the Cathedral Museum; check the current option and prices on the cathedral’s website. The tower is reached by steep stairs. Wawel Cathedral remains an active place of worship, so tourist access can be limited during Masses and ceremonies, and parts of the site may close temporarily. On Sundays, tourist visiting begins only after the services.

Planning your visit

Allow around 1.5–2 hours for the cathedral, tower and crypts, plus extra time for queues in high season. Tickets are valid on the day of purchase, and daily admission may be limited. Before you go, check the official opening hours, event calendar and baggage rules.
