Sigismund Bell on Wawel Hill

The Sigismund Bell was hung in 1521 in the Sigismund Tower of Wawel Cathedral. It was cast in Kraków the year before and funded by King Sigismund I the Old. Hans Beham, a bell-founder from Nuremberg, gave it a scale that still impresses: the bronze bell weighs 9,650 kg, while the bell with its yoke, clapper and equipment weighs about 12,600 kg. It is one of the defining symbols of Wawel and Polish history.

When it rings and what to see in the tower

Zygmunt does not ring every day. It is set in motion by hand by twelve bell-ringers for selected major religious and state occasions. The cathedral publishes a ringing calendar; in 2026 it includes national and religious holidays and the feast of St John Paul II. In the Sigismund Tower you can see not only the great bell but also the self-supporting wooden frame and the cathedral’s other four largest bells. The climb is by stairs, so treat it as a short but fairly demanding part of a Wawel visit.

Tickets and hours

The Sigismund Bell is covered by the cathedral ticket. Individual admission costs PLN 26, reduced admission PLN 18; groups of at least 11 pay PLN 23 or PLN 16 per person. From April to October, ticket sales run Monday–Saturday 9:00–16:30 and Sunday 12:30–16:30; from November to March, Monday–Saturday 9:00–15:30 and Sunday 12:30–15:30. The cathedral itself stays open longer, until 17:00 or 16:00. The tower may close temporarily, and sightseeing is not allowed during services. Keep quiet and cover your shoulders and back.
