Tatra National Park

Tatra National Park (Tatrzański Park Narodowy) protects the Polish side of the Tatra Mountains, the highest range in the Carpathians and the only truly alpine landscape in Poland. Granite and limestone peaks, glacial lakes, deep valleys and forests home to brown bears, chamois and marmots lie just above the resort town of Zakopane (say "zah-ko-PAH-neh"). Where it is and how to get there

The park sits on Poland's southern border with Slovakia, about 100 km (60 miles) south of Kraków. Kraków's airport is the usual gateway; from the city, buses and cars reach Zakopane in roughly 2 hours, trains take longer. From Zakopane's bus station, frequent minibuses run to the main trailheads: Kuźnice (for Kasprowy Wierch and Giewont), the Kościeliska and Chochołowska valleys, and Palenica Białczańska for Morskie Oko. Private cars are banned on the road up to Kuźnice, and the parking lot at Palenica Białczańska must be booked online in advance through the park's e-ticket system.

Why it matters

The park was created by a 1954 government decree and has operated since January 1, 1955. It covers about 211.6 km² (82 sq mi); together with Slovakia's TANAP it forms a protected mountain area of roughly 100,000 hectares. Protection here goes back to 1868, when the Galician parliament passed a law safeguarding marmots and chamois. Since 1993 the Polish and Slovak parks have formed a cross-border UNESCO Biosphere Reserve — a nature program, not the World Heritage List.

It is also Poland's busiest national park: more than 5 million visits were recorded in 2024.

Top things to do in Tatra National Park

The park has about 275 km (170 miles) of marked trails.

• Morskie Oko ("Eye of the Sea") — the largest lake in the Tatras, framed by sheer granite walls. An asphalt road leads up from Palenica Białczańska (about 9 km, usually 2–2.5 hours each way); it is the most popular outing in the park.
• Rysy — Poland's highest peak. The Polish summit is 2,499 m (8,199 ft) by the park's figures; the main summit, on the Slovak side, is 2,501 m. The route from Morskie Oko has chains and exposed sections and suits experienced hikers only.
• Valley of the Five Polish Ponds — a high glacial valley with the deepest lake on the Polish side and the highest mountain hut in the Polish Tatras.
• Giewont (1,894 m) — the "Sleeping Knight" ridge with an iron cross, visible from all of Zakopane.
• Kasprowy Wierch (1,987 m) — reachable on foot from Kuźnice or by cable car (tickets sold separately by the cable-car operator).
• Lower valleys — Kościeliska with the Mroźna Cave (separate ticket) and Chochołowska, famous for purple crocus meadows in spring; both are good choices for families.
• Orla Perć — the hardest marked trail in the Polish mountains, for experienced scramblers only.

How much time do you need?

Plan at least three or four days: one for Morskie Oko, one for a valley walk, one for Kasprowy Wierch or the Gąsienicowa meadows, and a spare day for weather. Start early — trailheads are calmest before 8 a.m., and summer afternoons often bring thunderstorms.

Winter visits (2026/27)

The park stays open year-round, but from December 1 to May 15 three trail sections are closed: Morskie Oko – Świstówka – Five Ponds Valley, the route from Tomanowa Valley to Chuda Przełączka, and the upper Giewont trail from Grzybowiec Pass. The park may close other areas temporarily, especially in avalanche danger, so check the trail and avalanche bulletins on the park website before you set out. Above the mountain huts you need crampons, an ice axe and avalanche gear. On the Slovak side, high trails close from November 1.

Tickets, opening hours and rules

As of October 2026 (prices may change):

• Day ticket: 11 PLN, reduced 5.50 PLN; 7-day ticket: 55 PLN / 27.50 PLN; group ticket (up to 10 people): 99 PLN.
• Free: children under 7.
• Where to buy: online on the park website, via QR codes at the entrances or at ticket booths. Save the ticket on your phone, as coverage is patchy.
• Opening hours: from March 1 to November 30 walking in the park between dusk and dawn is prohibited to protect wildlife; ticket booths in October usually work 7:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m. (some until 3:00 p.m. from October 15), with shorter hours in winter.
• Dogs: not allowed, except on the Droga pod Reglami path (leashed) and along the floor of Chochołowska Valley.
• Trail signposts are in Polish, but the color-coded markings and walking times on them are easy to follow without the language.

Is it worth visiting?

Yes — even a single day at Morskie Oko shows why the Tatras are Poland's favorite mountains. To avoid the crowds, come in late September, October or on weekdays in June, and pair your hikes with Zakopane's wooden architecture.
