Witkiewiczówka Villa in Zakopane

On Antałówka Street in Zakopane stands a villa where the history of one family intertwined with the history of Podhale architecture. Witkiewiczówka is a wooden residence built in 1903-1904 in the Zakopane style — a national style created by Stanisław Witkiewicz. The design of the villa was prepared by his nephew, Jan Witkiewicz Koszczyc, son of Jan, brother of Stanisław.

The villa of Witkacy

The most important chapter in the history of the house was written between 1931 and 1939, when Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz, known as Witkacy, lived and worked here: a painter, playwright and philosopher, one of the most important figures of Polish culture in the first half of the 20th century. It is this connection with Witkacy that makes the villa a destination for art lovers visiting Zakopane. The value of the building was formally confirmed in 1947, when Witkiewiczówka was entered in the register of monuments.

A guesthouse to this day

The villa remains in private hands and serves as a guesthouse, so you can not only look at it from the street but also stay inside. The building has undergone careful renovation, for which its owners received an award from the General Conservator of Monuments in 2001 for exemplary restoration work. The location at the foot of Antałówka is convenient for tourists: the paths of the Tatra National Park are close by, and a walk to Krupówki takes a dozen or so minutes.
