Wieliczka Salt Mine

The Wieliczka Salt Mine (pronounced roughly "vyeh-LEECH-kah") is an underground world of chapels, lakes and carved chambers just outside Kraków, and one of the very first sites ever placed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. For more than 700 years miners cut rock salt here, and along the way they sculpted altars, statues and chandeliers from the salt itself. If you are planning things to do near Kraków, this is the classic half-day trip — and it really is worth visiting.

Where it is and how to get there

Wieliczka is a small town on the southeastern edge of Kraków, roughly 10 km from the city center. Kraków's John Paul II Airport is the nearest international airport. The easiest way to get there is the suburban train from Kraków Główny (the main station) to Wieliczka Rynek-Kopalnia, which is a few minutes' walk from the mine. City bus 304 also runs from the Dworzec Główny Zachód stop to Wieliczka Kopalnia Soli; you need an agglomeration ticket valid for zones I and II. There is parking around the mine if you drive.

A short history

Rock salt was mined in Wieliczka from the 13th century, and for centuries the mine belonged to the royal salt enterprise known as the Kraków Saltworks. Together with Bochnia it formed the largest mining business of old Poland. Industrial mining only ended in 1996, after salt prices fell and flooding became a threat. The workings reach a depth of 327 m (1,073 ft) and stretch for more than 287 km (178 miles), so visitors see only a tiny fraction.

UNESCO listed the mine in 1978. In 2013 the listing was extended to include the Bochnia mine and the Saltworks Castle as the "Royal Salt Mines in Wieliczka and Bochnia." Famous visitors over the centuries reportedly included Goethe and Chopin, and in 2019 a record 1.9 million people came. During World War II the German occupiers planned to use the mine for war production, and in 1944 Jewish concentration camp prisoners were brought here for forced labor.

What you'll see on the Tourist Route

The standard tour covers 3.5 km (2.2 miles) and goes down to 135 m. You walk down more than 800 steps — mostly downhill — and ride an elevator back to the surface. Expect 2–3 hours including the museum section, always with a guide. The temperature underground stays at 17–18°C (63–64°F) all year.

Highlights include:

• St. Kinga's Chapel, about 101 m underground and roughly 54 m long, with chandeliers made of salt crystals and a salt relief of the Last Supper.
• Brine lakes glowing green under the lights.
• Historic wooden machinery, including horse-powered treadmills used to haul salt.
• Carved figures of Copernicus and a chamber dedicated to Goethe.

Your ticket also covers the underground exhibition of the Kraków Saltworks Museum on level III (about 1.5 km and 40 extra minutes).

Other tours

The Miners' Route (1.9 km, down to 101 m, 14–16°C) is a hands-on tour with helmets and lamps, starting at the Regis Shaft. It is open to visitors aged 10 and up and runs in Polish and English only.

Tickets and opening hours (as of October 2026)

Prices are in Polish złoty (PLN) and depend on the season and tour language. In October and November 2026 (low season), the Tourist Route with a foreign-language guide costs PLN 143 (adult) and PLN 121 (reduced), and family tickets are PLN 358 (2+1) and PLN 430 (2+2). Children under 4 go free but need a free control ticket. In high summer the adult price rises to PLN 169. Polish-language tours are cheaper, but you won't understand much.

Guided tours in English run regularly. For other languages — including German, French, Spanish and Italian — you must buy tickets online in advance. Buying online is the only way to guarantee a fixed time; the ticket office sells only what is left.

In October 2026 the Tourist Route operates 8:00 am–6:00 pm, and from November 2 8:00 am–5:00 pm. According to the booking calendar, the mine is closed on November 1 and December 24–25, 2026. December and early 2027 times had not been published yet, so check the online booking schedule.

Tips for your visit

• Wear comfortable shoes and bring a light jacket, even in summer.
• The route is not wheelchair accessible. Visitors with limited mobility can ask about adapted options at rezerwacja@kopalnia.pl.
• With toddlers, a baby carrier is far more practical than a stroller.
• Mornings outside July and August are the least crowded.

Is it worth visiting?

Yes — especially if you combine it with a walk around Wieliczka's Upper Market Square and the brine graduation tower in Kinga Park. Many visitors pair Wieliczka with Kraków's Old Town on the same day.
