St Clement's Church in Wieliczka

For centuries this was the miners' parish: every morning a special "diggers' Mass" was said here for the crews about to go underground, and the altars were paid for by the officials who ran the royal salt works. St Clement's Church in Wieliczka stands opposite the Salt Works Castle, a few hundred metres from the Salt Mine, and its patron, Pope Clement, is regarded as the first patron saint of miners. The crypt beneath the Morsztyn Chapel holds a monstrance from 1490.

Three churches on one spot

The parish is first mentioned in a bull of Pope Gregory IX in 1229; the original church was probably wooden. Between 1333 and 1370 the townspeople built a Gothic church of stone and brick. It stood until the late 18th century, when underground tremors damaged its structure, and in 1786 it was taken down to the foundations. The present church was built in 1804–1806 in the sober late-Baroque style of the Austrian period, on the old foundations, and was consecrated on 4 April 1825 by Bishop Grzegorz Ziegler. In 1888 the façade was remodelled to a design by Sławomir Odrzywolski.

What to see

• The Morsztyn Chapel – a late-Baroque funerary chapel of 1689–1693 with stucco work of 1693 by the Italian artist Baltazar Fontana, one of the parts that survived the demolition of the Gothic church.
• The crypt below the chapel – it displays the parish's greatest treasures, including the late-Gothic monstrance of 1490 donated by the salt-works official Jan Borzymowski.
• The free-standing bell tower – built of masonry at the end of the 17th century. Tradition and the parish link it to King John III Sobieski; sources differ on the exact date and circumstances.
• The wall paintings – painted in 1883 by Józef Pochwalski and restored in 2001–2012.
• Buttressed chancel walls – a section of the medieval church built into the present one.

Did you know?

In the 16th–18th centuries the Wieliczka parish was one of the wealthiest in Poland. Miners' guilds and brotherhoods – diggers, salt boilers, carpenters and porters – were attached to the church, and several parish priests taught at Kraków University. The treasury survived the demolition almost intact, which is why the 19th-century interior holds works from the older church. In 2024 the Kraków Saltworks Museum showed 140 objects from the parish collection in the Salt Works Castle, most of them normally hidden, including the porters' late-Gothic reliquary cross of about 1500. The year 2025 marked 200 years since the present church was consecrated.

Tripto tip

The church stands at ul. Zamkowa 7, opposite the Salt Works Castle and about 300 m from the Salt Mine entrance, so it is an easy stop before or after your tour underground. It is an active parish church: visit outside Mass times and check with the parish for opening hours and access to the crypt. Outside, look for the bell tower and the Gothic buttresses at the chancel. Allow 20–30 minutes, and combine it with a walk around the market square and to the brine graduation tower.
