Father Bernatek Footbridge

Father Bernatek Footbridge is a pedestrian and cycle crossing over the Vistula, linking Kraków’s Kazimierz and Podgórze districts. It is about 145 m long and has a distinctive arch; balancing sculptures by Jerzy Kędziora hang from its railings. It is both a convenient connection between neighbourhoods and one of Kraków’s best-known contemporary walking spots.

Sculptures above the Vistula

The suspended figures look as if they are balancing on thin lines. In daylight you can best appreciate their shapes and relationship with the river; after dark, the illuminated structure and sculptures become the focus. The bridge works well for a short walk, photographs and starting a riverside route.

Kazimierz and Podgórze

On the Kazimierz side, Mostowa Street, Wolnica Square and the former Jewish district are close by. On the Podgórze side, the Market Square, St Joseph’s Church and Ghetto Heroes Square are within walking distance. The footbridge therefore connects two distinct parts of Kraków rather than functioning as a standalone attraction.

Practical information

The bridge is for pedestrians and cyclists, with entrances on both banks of the Vistula. It can become busy at peak times and during riverside walks, so take care near the sculptures and give way to cyclists. Visit it as part of a Kazimierz–Podgórze walk, especially at sunset or after dark.
