John Paul II Centre in Kraków

The John Paul II Centre "Do Not Be Afraid!" in Kraków is a pilgrimage and cultural complex in the Łagiewniki district (say "wah-gyev-NEE-kee"), built around the octagonal Sanctuary of St. John Paul II, a museum devoted to the Polish pope and a 68-meter observation tower. It stands on the former Solvay chemical works, where young Karol Wojtyła labored during the Nazi occupation – which makes it one of the key places for anyone tracing the life of John Paul II.

Where it is

The centre is at Totus Tuus 32, about 5 km south of Kraków's Main Market Square and roughly 20 km from Kraków Airport. It sits next to the better-known Divine Mercy Sanctuary, so most visitors see both on the same trip. Kraków's historic center is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and Karol Wojtyła served here as priest, bishop and archbishop before his election as pope in 1978.

History

The site, nicknamed the "White Seas," was once a set of soda-waste settling ponds of the Solvay plant, closed in 1989. During World War II Wojtyła worked as a laborer at Solvay, so the location is deeply symbolic. Key dates:

• May 11, 2007 – Cardinal Stanisław Dziwisz blessed a cross on the building site;
• October 11, 2008 – construction officially began;
• June 12, 2011 – a relic of the pope's blood was placed in the lower church;
• June 23, 2013 – the church was blessed;
• October 16, 2016 – the sanctuary was dedicated.

The architect was Andrzej Mikulski, and the project cost almost PLN 200 million. The name echoes the pope's words at his inauguration in 1978: "Do not be afraid! Open wide the doors for Christ!"

What to see

• Upper church – an octagon inspired by the Byzantine churches of Ravenna such as San Vitale, covered in large mosaics designed by Fr. Marko Ivan Rupnik. It displays the cassock John Paul II wore when he was shot in St. Peter's Square on May 13, 1981. Three bronze doors show scenes from his life.
• Lower church (Church of Relics) – a marble altar holding an ampoule of the pope's blood taken at Rome's Gemelli hospital, plus his pastoral cross.
• Priests' Chapel – modeled on St. Leonard's Crypt at Wawel Cathedral, with a stone slab from the pope's first tomb in the Vatican Grottoes.
• St. John Paul II Museum – "Our Pope," a large collection of gifts from his 104 foreign pilgrimages; "Who Is the Man of the Shroud?" about the Shroud of Turin; and "Karol Wojtyła in Trentino" on his love of mountains and sport.
• Fatima Tower – 68 m including the cross, with a glazed terrace at about 50 m (272 steps or an elevator). On clear days you can see the Tatra Mountains.

Opening hours (as of October 2026)

• Sanctuary: weekdays 7:30 am–7 pm, Sundays and holidays 7:30 am–9 pm.
• Museum: daily 9 am–5 pm.
• Fatima Tower: in winter daily 9 am–5 pm by reservation for groups of 10+; check the website for other periods.
• Mass (in Polish): weekdays 8:00, 10:00, 12:00 and 17:00; Sundays 8:00, 9:30, 11:00, 12:30, 17:00 and 20:00.

Tickets and prices

• Sanctuary: free.
• Museum: PLN 15, reduced PLN 10, family PLN 25.
• Fatima Tower: PLN 5.
• Guided group tour (up to 50 people): PLN 100, booked in advance, daily except Sundays.

Polish złoty (PLN) is the currency; ask about English-language guiding when you book.

How to visit

Allow about 1 hour for the two churches and 2–3 hours with the museum and tower. Dress modestly, keep quiet and avoid sightseeing in chapels during Mass. To reach it, take trams 10, 11 or 50 to Sanktuarium Bożego Miłosierdzia and walk through the park (15–20 minutes via the Bridge of Mercy), trams 8 or 22 to Borek Fałęcki (about 900 m on foot), bus 224 from Wieliczka, or a train to Kraków Sanktuarium station. There is on-site parking, including for coaches, plus public restrooms by the coach lot.

Is it worth visiting? For Catholic pilgrims, absolutely. For others, the mosaics and the view from the tower make a worthwhile half-day combined with the Divine Mercy Sanctuary or the Wieliczka Salt Mine.
