Skałka in Kraków — Basilica and Crypt

Skałka in Kraków, the Basilica of St Michael the Archangel and St Stanislaus Bishop, is one of Kazimierz’s best-known landmarks. Tradition identifies this as the place where Bishop Stanisław of Szczepanów died in 1079. The basilica and Pauline monastery stand at 15 Skałeczna Street.

From a martyrdom site to a Baroque basilica

A church stood on Skałka as early as the 11th century; a Gothic building replaced it in the 14th century. The complex gained its present appearance during the Baroque rebuilding of 1733–1751. Inside, look for Tadeusz Kuntze’s painting of St Michael in the high altar and for the architectural arrangement that reflects the importance of this historic shrine.

The Crypt of the Meritorious

Beneath the church is the Crypt of the Meritorious Creators of Polish Culture, laid out in 1876–1880 to a design by Teofil Żebrawski. It holds, among others, Jan Długosz, Józef Ignacy Kraszewski, Stanisław Wyspiański, Jacek Malczewski, Karol Szymanowski and Czesław Miłosz. The altar of St Stanislaus also presents the tradition associated with the bishop’s martyrdom at Skałka.

Visiting Skałka

The Paulines offer guided visits to the basilica, crypt and selected monastery spaces. The official route includes the Old Library, Treasury, St Stanislaus’s spring and the Archaeological Relics Park; the full tour takes about 1.5–2 hours. For summer 2026 the published schedule uses weekend departures, with tickets priced at PLN 30 regular and PLN 20 reduced. Check the current timetable before travelling, as liturgy and events can affect access.
