The Vistula Boulevards (Bulwary Wiślane, roughly "bool-VAH-ri veesh-LAH-neh") are Kraków's historic riverside embankments, now the city's favorite place to stroll, cycle and picnic with Wawel Castle as the backdrop. They line both banks of the Vistula River, Poland's longest, from below Wawel to Kazimierz and Podgórze. If you want to link the Old Town, the Jewish quarter and the former ghetto district in one walk – or catch the best sunset in town – this is where to go.
The Vistula once took a different route: an old arm of the river separated Kazimierz from Kraków until it was filled in in 1878–1880. The river was then regulated in its present bed, and the boulevards were built in 1905–1909, both as flood defenses and as port quays. Each has a high upper wall and a lower quay wall, linked by stone stairs and ramps. They proved their worth in the major floods of 1970, 1997 and 2010, and have been a protected monument since 2011.
Near Grunwaldzki Bridge, look for the statue of Dżok, a dog famous for his loyalty, by Bronisław Chromy – the same sculptor who made the Wawel Dragon.
The boulevards are part of the Vistula Cycle Route, a section of EuroVelo 4, so they are great for a bike ride. In season, boats leave from below Wawel for 30–60 minute sightseeing cruises and a roughly four-hour trip to Tyniec Abbey; a water tram has also operated on the river since 2009. Schedules and prices change every year, so check with the operators.
Yes – it costs nothing, fits easily between museum visits, and gives you the best view of Wawel Castle from the river. Come in the evening for the sunset and the floodlit castle, or early in the morning for quiet paths and clear photos.
Czerwieński Boulevard is about 1 km south of the Main Market Square – walk down from Wawel Hill. The nearest tram stops are "Wawel" and "Filharmonia". Kraków Airport (Balice) is around 15 km west, with trains to Kraków Główny.
