Things to Do in Wieliczka: the Salt Mine and the Town Above It
Wieliczka sits just south-east of Kraków on top of a rock salt deposit that was mined from the 13th century until 1996. Together with Bochnia, the mine formed the royal Kraków Saltworks, one of the richest enterprises of old Poland. The Wieliczka Salt Mine was on UNESCO's very first World Heritage list in 1978, and since 2013 the listing "Royal Salt Mines in Wieliczka and Bochnia" also covers the Bochnia mine and the Saltworks Castle. Most visitors come for the underground tour only, but the small town around the shafts is worth a couple of hours too.

- The Tourist Route covers 3.5 km of chambers and passages down to 135 m, including St. Kinga's Chapel, where everything from the altar to the chandeliers is made of salt.
- Your Tourist Route ticket also covers the underground exhibition of the Kraków Saltworks Museum, about 1.5 km long and home to the mine's largest chamber.
- Tours run in English and other languages, and foreign-language tours other than English must be booked online in advance.
- It is the easiest day trip from Kraków: a regional train takes you to Wieliczka Rynek-Kopalnia, a few minutes' walk from the mine entrance.
- The temperature underground stays at 17–18°C all year, so the mine works just as well on a rainy or freezing day.

Morning: the Tourist Route
Book an early time slot online; an online ticket guarantees entry at your chosen time, while the ticket office sells only remaining places. Tours start at the Daniłowicz Shaft and take 2–3 hours.

When the guided part ends, join the queue marked for the museum entrance. The exhibition on level III takes another 40–60 minutes and needs no extra ticket.
Midday: fresh salty air in St. Kinga's Park
Half an hour at the graduation tower or on its viewing platform. Check that it is open that day, as it can close in winter because of the weather.
Afternoon: market square, castle walls and St. Clement's
Take a photo on the 3D painting, walk round the square, then follow Zamkowa Street past the fenced-off Saltworks Castle to St. Clement's Church.

Day 1: Wieliczka above and below ground
Tourist Route or Miners' Route
Choose the classic Tourist Route with the underground museum, or the Miners' Route from the Regis Shaft, where you get overalls and a lamp; it is for ages 10 and up and runs in Polish and English only.

Day 2: Bochnia and Niepołomice, or Kraków

Poland's oldest salt mine, about 26 km from Wieliczka as the crow flies. Tours take 3–4 hours from the Campi Shaft and include an underground train; selected tours offer free audio guides in English.

Niepołomice Royal Castle
On the way back, the castle begun by Casimir the Great and rebuilt under Sigismund Augustus, nicknamed the "little Wawel". From October to April the museum opens Tue–Sun 10:00–17:00 and is closed on Mondays. A car makes this pairing much easier.

Getting there
By train: Regional trains run by Koleje Małopolskie go from Kraków Główny to Wieliczka Rynek-Kopalnia; the ride usually takes 20–30 minutes and the Daniłowicz Shaft is a few minutes' walk away. Frequency varies through the day, so check the timetable before you set off.
By bus: Bus 304 runs from the Dworzec Główny Zachód stop in Kraków to the Wieliczka Kopalnia Soli stop. You need an agglomeration ticket valid for zones I and II.
From the airport: Kraków Airport (Balice) is about 22 km from Wieliczka. The simplest route is the train to Kraków Główny and on to Wieliczka.
By car: There are car parks next to the mine. The Tourist Route starts at ul. Daniłowicza 10, the Miners' Route at the Regis Shaft (pl. Kościuszki 9).
Getting around: The mine entrance, St. Kinga's Park, the market square, the castle and St. Clement's are all a few minutes apart on foot; St. Sebastian's is up a short hill. If you are staying in Kraków, see our Kraków guide.
When to go
The mine is open all year. Underground it is a steady 17–18°C, so bring a light sweater even in summer. Early morning slots and the months outside the summer holidays are the quietest. Summer prices are higher: in July 2026 a foreign-language Tourist Route ticket cost 169 zł.
Winter 2026/27: the Tourist Route runs 8:00–18:00 in October 2026 and 8:00–17:00 from 2 November; the Miners' Route runs 9:00–17:00 and then 9:00–15:00. The mine is closed on 1 November and on 24 and 25 December 2026. Hours for December and early 2027 had not yet been published at the time of writing, so check the online shop before your visit. The graduation tower is seasonal and may close in winter because of the weather.
Closures: the Saltworks Castle and its courtyard have been closed since late October 2025 and will stay closed until the end of 2028; you can only see the walls from outside. The museum's exhibition remains open underground on the Tourist Route.
Mondays: the Wieliczka mine is open every day, but the castle museum in Niepołomice is closed on Mondays.

How long do you need in Wieliczka?
Allow 3–4 hours for the mine alone: 2–3 hours on the Tourist Route plus 40–60 minutes in the underground museum. Add the graduation tower, the market square and the two churches and you have a relaxed full day.
How much is a Wieliczka Salt Mine ticket in 2026?
In October and November 2026 a Tourist Route ticket with a foreign-language guide costs 143 zł (reduced 121 zł); the Polish-language tour costs 103 zł (reduced 82 zł). Children under 4 go free with a booked control ticket. Prices are higher in summer. The underground museum is included.
Do I need to book Wieliczka Salt Mine tickets in advance?
It is strongly recommended. An online ticket guarantees entry at your chosen time, while the ticket office only sells remaining places. For tours in languages other than Polish and English, you must buy tickets online in advance.
How do I get from Kraków to the Wieliczka Salt Mine?
Take a regional train from Kraków Główny to Wieliczka Rynek-Kopalnia, usually 20–30 minutes, then walk a few minutes to the mine. Alternatively, bus 304 runs from the Dworzec Główny Zachód stop; you need a zone I and II agglomeration ticket.
Is the Wieliczka Salt Mine open in winter?

Children enjoy it, and families with kids aged 5–12 can choose the Legends tour. With small children a baby carrier works better than a pushchair because of the hundreds of steps. The Tourist Route is not accessible for wheelchair users; ask the mine about its offer for visitors with limited mobility.
