Bochnia Salt Mine

The Bochnia Salt Mine is Poland’s oldest salt mine, operating since the deposit was discovered in 1248. Its underground route leads through chambers and workings that preserve traces of centuries of mining. Signature elements include a mine train, a multimedia story, a boat crossing through a flooded section, chapels and salt sculptures.

What the route includes

Bochnia offers several tour variants, so check which attractions are included in your ticket. A popular route features the underground boat crossing, while older children can also try the 140-metre slide. The Ważyn Chamber contains recreational spaces and a place where visitors can even spend the night 468 metres underground. Adapted options for visitors with disabilities are also available.

History and the underground landscape

The chambers contain salt, timber structures, rails, chapels and traces of hand-cut mining. This centuries-old mine is more than scenery: the layout of the galleries shows how technology and working organisation evolved. In 2013, Bochnia joined the UNESCO entry for the Royal Salt Mines of Wieliczka and Bochnia.

Practical information

Allow 3–4 hours for a full visit with underground transport. It is cool below ground, so bring an extra layer and comfortable shoes. Opening hours, route variants, age limits and ticket sales change; book ahead because places in each group are limited. Check the mine’s current visitor rules before travelling.
