Castles
Stary Wiśnicz, Lesser Poland
Wiśnicz Castle (say "VEESH-neech") is a Baroque hilltop residence of the powerful Lubomirski family, ringed by star-shaped bastion fortifications, near the town of Nowy Wiśnicz about 50 km southeast of Kraków. Run by the Museum of the Wiśnicz Region, the castle, a former Carmelite monastery and the little planned town around them form a landscape protected as a Historic Monument of Poland. It is open all year, winter included, which makes it a good day trip from Kraków in any season.
The castle was founded in the 14th century by the Kmita family; the first record of the "castrum" appears in the accounts of the nearby Bochnia salt mines in 1396. After the Kmitas died out in 1553 it passed through other noble families until Sebastian Lubomirski bought it in 1593.
His son Stanisław Lubomirski, one of the most influential magnates of his day, transformed it in 1615–1621 into a lavish residence and surrounded it with a pentagon of bastions designed by the Italian architect Maciej Trapola. The showpiece of that era is the Baroque entrance gate shaped like a triumphal arch (1621). Stanisław also founded a fortified Carmelite monastery and, in 1616, the town of Nowy Wiśnicz. According to the castle's managers, the central points of the castle, monastery and town form an equilateral triangle.
Later owners included the Sanguszko, Potocki and Zamoyski families. After a fire in 1831 the castle was abandoned; the Lubomirski family association bought it back in 1901 and saved it from total ruin. Nationalized after World War II, it has been under restoration since 1949. In 2020 the "Nowy Wiśnicz architectural and landscape complex" became a Historic Monument of Poland.
Allow 2 to 2.5 hours for the castle and the underground route, or half a day with the chapel and fortifications.

Yes – it is one of the most striking fortified residences in southern Poland and a quieter alternative to the big Kraków sights. The museum runs a partner scheme with the Bochnia Salt Mine, part of the UNESCO-listed Royal Salt Mines, so you can easily combine the two in one day. The rolling hills around Wiśnicz are protected as a landscape park and are lovely in fall colors.
