Royal Castle in Niepołomice

The Royal Castle in Niepołomice (pronounced roughly "nyeh-po-woh-MEE-tseh") is a Gothic-and-Renaissance royal residence on the edge of the Niepołomice Forest, about 25 km (15 miles) east of Kraków. Thanks to its arcaded courtyard it is often called the "little Wawel," after Kraków's famous royal castle. Polish kings came here to hunt, receive envoys and escape epidemics in the capital. Today it houses the Niepołomice Museum, with a fine gallery of 19th-century Polish painting, as well as a hotel and restaurant.

A royal history

King Casimir the Great built the first castle in the 1340s: a Gothic fortress with two towers guarding the routes from Kraków to the south and east and a ford on the Vistula River. In the early 16th century King Sigismund the Old turned it into a Renaissance residence, and his Italian-born wife, Queen Bona Sforza, laid out Italian-style gardens on the south side. The forest also saw a royal tragedy: the pregnant Bona fell from her horse while hunting, and her prematurely born son died soon after.

After a fire around 1550, King Sigismund Augustus rebuilt the castle with two-story wings and arcades around a square courtyard. Stephen Báthory wrote his third will here, and in 1646 the court celebrated the coronation of Queen Ludwika Maria Gonzaga with a hunt and an opera performance.

Then came hard times: Swedish looting, use as Austrian barracks after the First Partition, and in 1945 retreating German troops blew up an ammunition store in the Gothic cellars. After the war the building held a school, a post office and apartments, until a thorough restoration in the 1990s.

What to see

The museum occupies the first floor. Highlights:

• "Sukiennice in Niepołomice 2" — more than 130 paintings and 25 sculptures of 19th-century Polish art on loan from the National Museum in Kraków, including works by Siemiradzki, Malczewski and Grottger, in eight rooms.
• A room devoted to Włodzimierz Puchalski, an outstanding Polish nature photographer, filmmaker and traveler.
• Hunting rooms, recalling the royal hunts in the forest.
• Parish treasures and an exhibition on the town's history.

The courtyard and arcades are open to stroll, and the gardens lie on the south side.

Opening hours and tickets (as of October 2026)

The museum is open Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00 am–5:00 pm from October 1 to April 30 and 10:00 am–6:00 pm from May to September. It is closed on Mondays.

• Art gallery only: PLN 10/6. Smaller exhibitions: PLN 5/3 each.

Allow about 1.5 hours.

How to get there

The castle is at ul. Zamkowa 2, right by the town square. By car it takes about 30 minutes from Kraków, either through Nowa Huta or via the A4 motorway (exits Szarów or Podłęże). Kraków Airport is the nearest airport.

Is it worth visiting?

Yes, if you want a royal castle without Wawel's crowds, or a calm half-day trip combined with a walk in the Niepołomice Forest.
