Wooden Church in Wieliczka

St. Sebastian's Church in Wieliczka (say "vyeh-LEECH-kah") is a 16th-century larchwood church hidden among old trees on Babina hill, on the southeastern edge of the town famous for its salt mine. Plain on the outside, it surprises inside with Art Nouveau wall paintings by Włodzimierz Tetmajer from the early 1900s. It is one of Wieliczka's finest wooden monuments and an easy add-on to a salt mine visit from Kraków.

Where it is

Wieliczka lies about 12 km (7.5 miles) southeast of central Kraków and roughly 22 km from Kraków Airport as the crow flies. Trains run from Kraków to Wieliczka Rynek-Kopalnia station; from there it is a walk through town and up the hill to the church at Świętego Sebastiana Street 23.

A short history

Construction began in 1581. Sources disagree on who drove it: some credit the local parish priest, Father Maciej Blandowski, others Sebastian Lubomirski, the royal administrator of the salt mine – the church's patron saint shares his name. Cardinal Jerzy Radziwiłł consecrated it in 1598. The church was remodeled in the 18th century and gained Baroque and Rococo furnishings.

In the early 20th century, local townspeople formed a restoration committee. During the works (usually dated 1903–1910, by some sources up to 1914), painter Włodzimierz Tetmajer – a leading figure of the Young Poland movement – decorated the interior, and Stefan Witold Matejko designed the stained glass. The church became a parish church on December 1, 2013.

What to see

• Tetmajer's murals: saints and blesseds of Polish history, floral and geometric patterns and a white eagle on the ceiling. Scholars read them as a patriotic story of Poland's rebirth, painted when the country was still partitioned.
• The Rococo high altar with an 18th-century painting of St. Sebastian.
• Side altars with a painting of the Virgin Mary and a 17th-century crucifix.
• 16th-century paintings, including the Madonna with Sts. Sebastian and Roch.
• A Baroque organ by the Cistercian organ builder Eliasz Wykuszewski.

Outside, note the log construction, shingled walls and roofs, the Baroque lantern turret above the chancel and the low west tower with an onion-shaped cap.

Visiting tips

This is an active parish church with no confirmed regular sightseeing hours (as of October 2026). Your best chance to see the interior is just before or after a service; you can also call the parish (+48 12 278 27 23), though English may be limited. The church's old website is no longer working. Allow about 30 minutes; photography is fine outside services. There is no admission fee.

Combining it with the salt mine

The church is a quiet counterpoint to the busy Salt Mine: after a few hours underground, the walk up green Babina hill is a welcome change. Kids may enjoy spotting the painted saints and the white eagle on the ceiling.

Is it worth visiting?

Yes, if you enjoy wooden architecture or early 20th-century Polish art – and it is a peaceful contrast to the crowds at the salt mine. Combine it with the UNESCO-listed Wieliczka Salt Mine, the Saltworks Castle museum and the brine graduation tower.
