Mogiła Cistercian Abbey

Mogiła Abbey (say "mo-GHEE-wah") is a Cistercian monastery in Kraków's Nowa Huta district – and the oldest landmark of a neighborhood better known for Stalin-era architecture. Monks have lived here without interruption since 1222. Its basilica holds a venerated medieval crucifix, and its cloisters are painted with Renaissance frescoes by a monk-artist. Declared a Monument of History in 2023, it remains one of Kraków's least crowded treasures and a perfect add-on to a Nowa Huta tour.

Where it is and how to get there

The abbey stands at ul. Klasztorna 11, about 10 km east of Kraków's Main Market Square. Take tram 10 (toward Pleszów) to the Klasztorna stop, or bus 174 (toward Kombinat); tram 16 and buses 123 and 163 also stop nearby. From Kraków Airport (Balice), allow around an hour by public transport. Coaches can park at the monastery, and a new bridge over the Vistula links Mogiła with the Wieliczka side of the river.

A short history

Bishop Iwo Odrowąż of Kraków brought Cistercian monks from Lubiąż in Silesia in 1222. The monastery was called Clara Tumba, "Bright Mound," and its church was consecrated on May 5, 1266. Medieval and Renaissance rulers visited often – King Casimir the Great helped expand the cloisters, and King Władysław Jagiełło came with Queen Jadwiga. The abbey survived Mongol and Swedish raids and major fires in 1447 and 1708; afterward the nave received Baroque vaults, and in 1780 the façade was remodeled by Franz Mosler from Opava.

Unlike most Polish monasteries, Mogiła was never abandoned by its monks. It became a parish church in 1851 and a minor basilica in 1970, and in September 2023 the abbey complex was named a Monument of History – the highest national heritage designation in Poland.

Things to see

• The Chapel of the Holy Cross, with the Mogiła Crucifix, a Gothic elm-wood figure about 194 cm tall from the mid-14th century. Legend says a blacksmith fished it out of the Vistula on Good Friday. It survived the fire of 1447 and has stood in its own chapel since 1597, beneath the Latin motto "Charitas sine modo" (Love without measure).
• The basilica – a cross-shaped, three-aisled Cistercian church of brick and stone. The chancel preserves an Annunciation painted in 1536–1538 by Brother Stanisław Samostrzelnik, a renowned Renaissance illuminator of manuscripts.
• The cloisters, decorated by Samostrzelnik in 1538–1541, plus the chapter house, the old warming room and the monastery garden.
• The Museum of Cistercian Spirituality and Culture (opened 2021), with the abbey's finest artworks, rare books and interactive models of Cistercian buildings.
• St. Bartholomew's Church by the monastery gate – a wooden church from 1466, built by carpenter Maciej Mączka, with a unique carved oak Gothic doorway.

Opening hours and practical information

As of October 2026:

• The basilica is open daily 5:30–19:15; entry is free. Avoid Mass times – on weekdays at 6:30, 7:30, 8:30 and 18:00; on Sundays from 6:30 through 18:00.
• The museum in winter (October 1–April 30) opens Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday, 10:00–15:00; in summer (May 1–September 30) Wednesday–Sunday, 10:00–15:00. Closed Mondays and Tuesdays. Guided visits at other times can be arranged at least seven days ahead: +48 667 706 716 or +48 12 644 23 31 (ext. 56).
• Groups tour the monastery by prior arrangement, checking in at the gatehouse.

Good to know

On the first Friday of each month, Masses run from early morning until midnight and an all-night vigil begins at 20:00 – a moving experience, but not the best time for sightseeing. Music lovers should note the basilica's 36-stop organ from the 1920s, one of the larger instruments in Kraków. Children usually enjoy the museum's interactive models of Cistercian buildings. Dress modestly and keep quiet in the Chapel of the Holy Cross, where people pray throughout the day.

Is it worth visiting?

Yes – especially if you are already heading out to see Nowa Huta, the socialist-realist "model town" built from 1949, whose Central Square and Ark of the Lord church are a short ride away. The contrast between 13th-century monastic calm and 1950s urban planning is striking. Allow 1–1.5 hours for the basilica and cloisters, or about two hours with the museum. In winter, plan your visit for a Wednesday or weekend, when the museum is open. The nearby Wanda Mound, an ancient earthen mound wrapped in legend, makes a pleasant short walk.
