The Jagiellonian University Botanical Garden in Kraków is the oldest botanical garden in Poland – a peaceful green oasis less than a kilometer from the Old Town and close to the main railway station. Founded in 1783, it covers almost 10 hectares of ponds, old trees, flower beds and glasshouses, and holds one of the country's finest orchid collections. It is a lovely break from sightseeing at any time of year, and the glasshouses make it worthwhile even in winter.
The garden was laid out in 1783 to a design by Franciszek Kaiser, on the initiative of the Commission of National Education – often described as Europe's first ministry of education. It was created on a former Czartoryski family garden that had belonged to the Jesuits, as a teaching garden for the Kraków Academy, today's Jagiellonian University. It began with about 2.4 hectares and reached its present 9.6 hectares in the 1950s. The observatory built in 1788–1792, now Collegium Śniadeckiego, still anchors the garden; its weather station has kept continuous records since 1825. The garden has been a protected monument since 1976.
The collections include around 5,000 plant taxa, with nearly 1,000 kinds of trees and shrubs and more than 2,000 greenhouse plants. Don't miss:
Yes, especially if you need a calm hour or two between museums. Spring and early summer bring the best blooms, autumn colors are superb in October, and in winter the heated glasshouses are the main attraction.
As of October 2026 (official website). The garden is open daily, year-round; glasshouses and the museum are closed on Mondays (except the Warszewicz Orangery).
Tickets: regular 22 PLN, reduced 12 PLN, family (2+2) 45 PLN; children under 4 free. Pay by cash, card or online. Dogs and bikes are not allowed, and strollers can't go into the glasshouses.
The entrance is at ul. Kopernika 27, about a 15-minute walk from the Main Market Square and close to Kraków Główny station – handy if you arrive by train from Kraków Airport (Balice, about 15 km west). There is no visitor parking and street spaces are scarce because of nearby hospitals, so walk or use public transport.
