St. Florian's Gate in Kraków (Polish: Brama Floriańska, "BRAH-mah flo-RYAN-skah") is the medieval city gate and tower that marks the northern entrance to the Old Town at the top of Floriańska Street. Together with a surviving stretch of the city walls and the Barbican just outside, it is one of the few remains of the fortifications that once ringed Kraków. It is also the traditional start of the Royal Route, the ceremonial path that led kings through the Main Market Square up to Wawel Castle.
The gate first appears in written records in 1307, and its oldest masonry dates from around 1300, when Kraków was enclosed by defensive walls. It took its name from St. Florian's Church in the former town of Kleparz, just to the north, where the road through the gate led. The tower received its Baroque crown in 1660 and stands 34.5 meters (113 ft) to the top of its finial.
In the early 19th century the city authorities planned to tear down the medieval walls. Professor Feliks Radwański argued that they sheltered the area around St. Mary's Basilica from cold northern winds, and in 1817 the Senate of the Free City of Kraków agreed to keep this stretch, the gate and the Barbican. The gate survived later threats too – in 1882 thanks to Prince Władysław Czartoryski, and in the early 20th century, when instead of demolishing it for a tram line the city simply deepened the passage. Narrow-gauge trams ran through the gate until the early 1950s.
Walking through the gate is free and possible 24/7. The paid part is the City Walls (Mury Obronne) route run by the Museum of Kraków, which lets you walk along the top of the walls and through the gate's interior.
Absolutely, and it takes little time: 15 minutes for the gate, about an hour with the walls route. The stairs up to the walls are steep, so the route is not suitable for wheelchairs or strollers, though the passage under the gate is level.
The gate is about a 5-minute walk from the Main Market Square up Floriańska Street, and about 10 minutes from Kraków Główny, the main train station, which has a rail link to Kraków Airport. Trams stop just outside the Planty park ring. The Old Town is a restricted traffic and paid parking zone, so walking is by far the easiest option.
