Cities & towns
Nowa Huta is a town built from scratch — Poland’s largest exercise in socialist-realist urban planning and one of the few such vast projects in Europe. Construction began in 1949 for the workers of a new metallurgical combine; the Lenin Steelworks, launched in 1954, was for years the largest industrial plant in Kraków. The district was designed on the model of a Renaissance ideal city: avenues radiate from the pentagonal Central Square, lined with representative housing estates featuring arcades and rich detailing — by intention without a single church, but with a statue of Lenin on the Avenue of Roses.
The new town soon slipped out of its creators’ control. In 1960 residents defended a cross erected without the authorities’ consent — those protests grew into one of the first mass confrontations between society and the communist state. In 1977 Cardinal Karol Wojtyła consecrated the Ark of the Lord, the district’s first church, won by parishioners through years of persistence; its shape resembles a huge tent stretched over the altar. Lenin’s monument stood on the Avenue of Roses from 1973 to 1989, collecting jokes and failed acts of sabotage before it was finally dismantled. In January 2023 the urban and architectural layout of Nowa Huta was declared a Monument of History.
The district is best explored on foot or by bike: the natural route runs from the Central Square along the Avenue of Roses towards the Nowa Huta Lagoon, and the northern tip with the Ark of the Lord deserves a separate visit. The district’s story is told by the Museum of Nowa Huta, a branch of the Museum of Kraków housed in the former Światowid cinema. Fast trams connect it with the Old Town; allow at least half a day for the walk with the museum and the Ark.
