Jan Matejko House in Kraków

Jan Matejko House at 41 Floriańska Street is the painter’s family home, where Jan Matejko (1838–1893) was born, lived with his family, worked and died. The 16th-century townhouse, remodelled in the 19th century, is now a branch of the National Museum in Kraków. The museum opened to the public in 1898, five years after the artist’s death, and came under MNK management in 1904. It is an intimate biographical visit rather than a conventional picture gallery.

What to see

The collection contains more than 8,000 objects. It includes family mementos, letters, documents, photographs, Matejko’s paintings and drawings, as well as his collections of crafts, textiles, clothing, arms, books and early prints. The preserved rooms and studio are especially valuable: they show the artist’s everyday surroundings alongside his work and collecting interests. In 2026, also check the temporary exhibition “Matejko: Satire and Comics at Jan Matejko’s House”, on display from 15 May 2026 to 31 January 2027.

Hours, tickets and access

The branch is closed on Mondays. It opens Tuesday 10:00–18:00 and Wednesday–Sunday 10:00–16:00; last admission is 20 minutes before closing. Tickets cost PLN 18 regular, PLN 14 reduced and PLN 36 family; pupils and students pay PLN 1. Tuesday offers free admission to permanent exhibitions. The building is not wheelchair accessible, but the branch provides audio description, a sensory kit, cloakroom and baby-changing facilities. Allow about an hour and check for exceptional opening hours before travelling.
