Skała is one of the oldest towns in Lesser Poland, founded in 1267 on the initiative of Blessed Salomea, about 20 km north of Kraków. Its market square keeps its medieval layout and holds a bronze monument to the town's founding and a statue of St Florian from 1800; the Baroque Church of St Nicholas is a few steps away. The town lies on the edge of Ojców National Park: 2 km away is the Hermitage of Blessed Salomea in Grodzisko, and the Łamańce rocks and the Petrified Wanderer rise by the road to Ojców. Skała is a handy start for a trip into the Jura uplands, reachable by bus from Kraków – good for walkers, cyclists and families.
