Skała, Lesser Poland
St Nicholas Church in Skała (pronounced "SKAH-wah") is the historic parish church of a small town about 25 km north of Kraków, on the doorstep of Ojców National Park. Behind its Baroque appearance stand 14th-century Gothic walls, and beside it rises an 18th-century wooden bell tower. If you are driving from Kraków to the castles, caves and limestone valleys of Ojców, it makes a quiet, authentic stop that most foreign visitors never see.
Skała lies in the Lesser Poland region (Małopolska), on the edge of the Kraków-Częstochowa Upland, known for its limestone rocks and medieval castles. From Kraków city center it takes about 40 minutes by car; suburban buses also connect the two. Kraków Airport is roughly 30 km away. The church stands near the small market square, so parking in the center and walking is easiest. Do not confuse Skała with Skałka, the famous church of St Stanislaus in Kraków's Kazimierz district.
Skała received town rights in 1267 from Duke Bolesław the Chaste, at the initiative of his sister Salomea, a Poor Clare nun later beatified by the Catholic Church. The oldest parts of the present church, the nave walls and part of the chancel, date from the second half of the 14th century. Fires in 1737 and 1763 destroyed much of it; each time it was rebuilt, ending up with a late Baroque look. In 1948–1949 a domed section was added, deliberately different from the old building. The church has been a registered historic monument since 1960.
This is an active parish church, not a museum: there are no tickets and no fixed visiting hours. The doors are usually open around Mass times; on Sundays Masses are at 7:30 am, 9:30 am, 11:30 am and 5 pm. Please do not walk around during services, and dress modestly. Allow 20 to 30 minutes, and bring a few Polish zloty (PLN) if you would like to leave a donation.
On its own it is a modest local landmark, but as part of a day trip to Ojców National Park it adds real historical depth. Combine it with Łokietek's Cave and Ojców Castle a few kilometers away, or with Grodzisko, a hill with a hermitage linked to Blessed Salomea.
