Jaskinia Łokietka

King Łokietek's Cave (Jaskinia Łokietka, roughly "yahs-KEEN-yah wo-KYET-kah") is the largest known cave in Ojców National Park, a small and beautiful protected area of limestone valleys about 25 km north of Kraków. A guided walk leads through cool, lamp-lit chambers tied to a legend about a medieval Polish king hiding from his enemies. It is short, easy and family-friendly, and one of the best half-day trips from Kraków if you want something outside the city.

Where it is and how to get there

Ojców (pronounced "OY-tsoof") lies in the Lesser Poland region, on the Kraków-Częstochowa Upland, famous for white limestone rocks and medieval castles. By car the drive from Kraków takes around 40 to 50 minutes; Kraków Airport is about 30 km away. Organized tours from Kraków also visit the park. You cannot drive up to the cave: the last stretch is a walk along the black-marked trail on the slope above the Sąspowska Valley, about 125 meters above the valley floor. Leave your car at one of the parking lots in Ojców and allow time for the climb.

What you will see

The route is about 320 meters long and passes through two main chambers, the Knights' Hall and the Bedroom. The cave formed in Jurassic limestone and was shaped by water; look for flowstone, small stalactites and a formation known as the Eagle. The temperature stays at about 7 to 8°C (45 to 46°F) all year, so bring a sweater even in July, and wear shoes with good grip, as there are stairs and damp patches.

The legend of King Łokietek

Władysław Łokietek, whose nickname means "elbow-high" because of his short stature, reunited much of Poland and was crowned king in 1320. Local tradition says that before that, while fleeing Bohemian troops, he hid in this cave for several weeks, and a spider spun a web so thick across the entrance that his pursuers assumed nobody was inside. It is a legend, not documented history, but guides love to tell it.

Tickets and opening hours (as of October 2026)

• Adults PLN 30, reduced PLN 21 (Polish zloty), guide included.
• The 2026 season runs from April 20 to November 11; closed on November 1.
• Guided entries usually every 30 minutes; last entry at 4:30 pm in October and 3 pm in November.
• No reservations; groups of 2 to 60, and ticket sales stop 10 minutes before each entry.

Reading up on the cave in advance will help you get more out of the tour. On sunny weekends you may wait one to two hours, so come on a weekday or early.

Is it worth visiting?

Yes, as part of a day in Ojców National Park. Combine it with the ruins of Ojców Castle, the Hercules' Club rock and the Renaissance Pieskowa Skała Castle a few kilometers away. Families with toddlers should use a baby carrier rather than a stroller.
