Deotyma's Needle (Igła Deotymy) in Ojców

A lone, slender limestone spire rises from a meadow at the mouth of the Wrześnik ravine, and in autumn it looks like a burning torch – it is wrapped in Virginia creeper whose leaves turn an intense red. Along with Hercules' Club and the Kraków Gate, Deotyma's Needle (Igła Deotymy) is one of the best-known rock formations of the Prądnik Valley in Ojców National Park.

A rock named after a poet

The name comes from Deotyma, the pen name of Jadwiga Łuszczewska (1834–1908), a Warsaw poet and novelist of the Romantic era, famous for her literary improvisations. Her mother chose the pseudonym when Jadwiga was in her teens. The rock was named to commemorate the poet's visit to Ojców in 1853. According to accounts, she stayed in the nearby villa "Pod Koroną" and sought inspiration for her poems here in the Prądnik Valley.

How it formed

The needle is a residual outcrop of Jurassic rocky limestone – harder and more resistant to weathering than the surrounding rock. As the Prądnik stream dissolved the limestone, it carved out a gorge up to 120 m deep, and karst processes sculpted the remaining rock into needles, gates and clubs. The needle stands alone on the east side of the stream, between the Panieńskie Skały and Kawalerskie Skały rocks, beside a few houses of valley residents.

What to look out for

At the foot of the rock grow planted Ojców birches – a very rare species known from only about 11 sites. The rock is closed to climbing, so you can only admire it from below.

Tripto tip

The best time for photos is autumn, when the creeper turns red. The needle stands beside the marked trail running from Ojców along the Prądnik Valley, a short walk from the village centre. The stop itself takes 10–15 minutes, but combine it with the whole valley section, the Dark Cave (Jaskinia Ciemna) and Ojców Castle. Ojców National Park, created on 1 January 1956, is the smallest national park in Poland – yet it packs in more than 400 caves and dozens of rock formations.
