Sąspowska Valley

The Sąspowska Valley (say "sonce-POV-skah") is the second-largest valley in Ojców National Park (say "OY-tsoof"), Poland's smallest national park, about 25 km (15 miles) north of Kraków. Almost undeveloped, with meadows on the valley floor, wooded slopes and limestone crags, it follows the crystal-clear Sąspówka stream from Ojców toward the village of Sąspów. If you are looking for things to do near Kraków in nature, and the main Prądnik Valley feels crowded, this is the quieter alternative.

Nature in the valley

The valley branches off the Prądnik Valley between two hills, Złota Góra and Góra Chełmowa. Its middle and lower sections, roughly 5 km (3 miles) long, lie inside the park. The Sąspówka stream has top-class water quality and is fed by many springs, including the Scout's Spring (Źródło Harcerza), home to an Alpine flatworm that survives as a relic of the Ice Age. Brown trout live in the stream, and beavers, reintroduced in 1985, have built dams you can spot from the path.

The slopes are dotted with limestone rocks, and researchers have counted 164 caves in the valley. In one rock shelter, archaeologists found one of the oldest traces of human presence in the area. At the valley mouth, two rocks form a natural gate; one of them, Jonaszówka, is a viewpoint. Watch for dippers and gray wagtails along the water.

The trail

The yellow Jurassic Valleys Trail runs along the valley floor. According to the park, it comes from the Kraków Gate rock in the Prądnik Valley, follows the Sąspówka upstream, passes through Sąspów and Kalinów and ends at Pieskowa Skała Castle. A green trail drops into the valley from the Złota Góra parking lot. Along the way:

• meadows mown once a year to stop the forest from taking over
• the mouth of the Jamki Ravine, a strict reserve, and the Scout's Spring
• crags on the slopes, though many are hidden by leaves in summer
• World War II graves in the lower valley, including a mass grave of Jews shot by the Germans in 1943

How long does it take, and who is it for?

Walking the valley one way usually takes 1.5 to 2 hours at an easy pace; more if you return the same way or loop via Złota Góra. The route is gentle and suits families. Dogs are allowed on a leash. Everything except the meadows is under strict protection: stay on the trail, do not climb, and do not enter caves (that requires park permission). The path gets muddy after rain. Signage is mostly in Polish.

Is it worth visiting?

Yes, especially in spring, when the meadows are green and the trees are just coming into leaf, or on a busy summer weekend when Ojców itself is packed. It is a walk rather than a sight: the reward is the calm.

• Parking: the Złota Góra lot charges PLN 8 per started hour for a car and lies about 1.5 km from central Ojców; meters take cards or coins

Getting there and nearby

Ojców is about 25 km north of Kraków; Kraków Airport (KRK) is the nearest airport. Enter the valley from Ojców at Jonaszówka, from the Złota Góra lot or from Sąspów. Nearby are the ruins of Ojców Castle, the Kraków Gate rock, Łokietek Cave and Pieskowa Skała Castle, which you can reach on foot along the yellow trail.
