Museums
Jelenia Góra, Lower Silesian
The Gerhart Hauptmann House in Jagniątków (say "yag-NYON-tkoof") is a museum in Villa Wiesenstein, the home of the German playwright and 1912 Nobel Prize winner from 1901 until his death in 1946. Jagniątków, formerly Agnetendorf, is now a quiet district of Jelenia Góra at the foot of the Karkonosze (Giant Mountains). The house is worth a visit for its early-20th-century interiors, a spectacular painted hall and a story that mirrors Silesia's 20th-century history.
Berlin architect Hans Grisebach designed the villa, built in 1900–1901 on a granite outcrop with mountain views and surrounded by a park of about 1.6 hectares. Hauptmann, a leading figure of German naturalism, used it as a retreat from Berlin's social whirl, between stays on the Baltic island of Hiddensee and in Italy. He lived through the end of World War II here, when Silesia passed to Poland, and died in the house on June 6, 1946; he was buried on Hiddensee.
After the war, the villa served as a children's holiday home until 1997. Following a joint declaration by Polish Prime Minister Tadeusz Mazowiecki and German Chancellor Helmut Kohl after 1989, it was restored with German federal support and opened to visitors on September 1, 2001; it has been a city museum since May 1, 2005.
Seven rooms are open: the study, the former library, the fireplace room and the dining room. The highlight is the Paradise Hall, the entrance hall covered entirely in murals painted in 1922 by Johannes Maximilian Avenarius. Exhibits include letters, first editions, photographs and personal belongings; a multimedia display lets you hear recordings of Hauptmann reading his work, and an upstairs room covers his contacts with Poles in 1945–1946. Plan about an hour. Guided tours for groups (Polish or German, about 60 minutes) must be booked in advance.
Jelenia Góra is about 110 km west of Wrocław (roughly 1.5–2 hours by car or a direct train). From Jelenia Góra's main railway station, city bus 15 stops right at "Dom Gerharta Hauptmanna" on Michałowicka Street. There is a paid museum parking lot by the stop (20 PLN per day for a car).
Yes, especially if you are interested in German literature (his best-known plays include The Weavers) or the region's layered history, or need a rainy-day plan in the mountains. Combine it with Chojnik Castle above nearby Sobieszów, or with the Carl and Gerhart Hauptmann House in Szklarska Poręba, dedicated to the writer and his elder brother.
