Oliwa Cathedral in Gdańsk (Archikatedra Oliwska, pronounced roughly "oh-LEE-vah") is a former Cistercian abbey church, the longest church in Poland and home to a famous Rococo organ whose carved angels and stars actually move as it plays. Right next door lies Oliwa Park, the abbots' former garden, with a palm house and a "whispering grotto." Together they make one of the most beautiful and peaceful corners of the Tricity area – a world away from the crowded Main Town. Since 2017 the cathedral has been a Polish Historic Monument.
The cathedral stands in the leafy Oliwa district, about 9 km northwest of Gdańsk's Main Town and roughly 10 km from Gdańsk Lech Wałęsa Airport (GDN). The SKM commuter train makes it an easy half-day trip from Gdańsk or Sopot.
On July 2, 1186, Duke Sambor I of Pomerania founded a Cistercian abbey here. The church burned in 1224 and 1350, and again in 1577, when mercenaries from Gdańsk set fire to the abbey during the city's war with King Stefan Batory. Rebuilt in 1578–1583, it was reconsecrated in 1594. In 1660 the Treaty of Oliva, ending a long war between Poland and Sweden, was signed in the abbey.
The church is 107 meters long on the outside, making it the longest church in Poland, and its twin towers rise 46 meters. Pope Paul VI made it a minor basilica in 1976, and Pope John Paul II raised it to an archcathedral in 1992. It was declared a Historic Monument of Poland on November 23, 2017.
The best way to experience the cathedral is a 20-minute organ recital. According to the parish, in 2026 they take place:
Check archikatedraoliwa.pl for ticket prices and the 2027 schedule. Each summer the International Organ Music Festival brings evening concerts.
This is a working cathedral: Sunday Masses are at 7, 8:30, 10, 11:30 a.m., 1, 6 and 8 p.m., weekday Masses at 7 and 8 a.m. and 6 p.m., when sightseeing is not possible. Entry outside services is free; dress modestly.
The 11.3-hectare park grew out of the monastery garden. Abbot Rybiński gave it a formal Baroque layout with clipped linden avenues, while Johann Georg Saltzmann designed the northern part as a landscape garden. Don't miss the Whispering Grotto and the palm house, whose new rotunda opened in March 2022. The Abbots' Palace houses the National Museum's modern art branch, and the Abbots' Granary its ethnography branch – check the museum's website for hours.
Absolutely. Allow about an hour for the cathedral and an organ recital, and another hour for the park. Arrive 10–15 minutes early for a good seat. The park is flat and stroller-friendly, and lovely in spring and fall.
The organ recital works well even for children: the moving angels and stars usually hold their attention for the full 20 minutes. Music lovers should try to time a visit with the summer festival. The cathedral floor sits almost a meter below ground level, so expect a few steps at the entrance if you are visiting with a stroller or wheelchair.
Take the SKM commuter train to Gdańsk Oliwa station and walk about 15 minutes, or a tram to the Oliwa terminus. Parking nearby is limited. Address: ul. bpa Edmunda Nowickiego 5.
