Hewelion the Lion Figures in Gdańsk

The Hewelion the Lion Trail is a family-friendly city game and an unusual way to explore Gdańsk. Bronze figures of the friendly lion stand at different points around the city, with each character referring to its location. Hewelion echoes the lion on Gdańsk’s coat of arms, while his name recalls Jan Heweliusz, the Gdańsk astronomer and instrument maker.

Where to find the figures

The trail runs through several parts of Gdańsk: from the Main Town and Długi Targ to the Brzeźno seafront, Oliwa, the stadium and the University of Gdańsk campus. The official route is still expanding, so new figures may appear. In 2025 Hewelion the Lawyer was unveiled at the University campus, and in 2026 Hewelion “Bremek” joined the trail at Forum Gdańsk. Check the current map and list of points before setting out.

A walk for children and adults

Looking for small sculptures turns an ordinary walk into a challenge that works well with children. Plan a short central section or connect several districts by public transport. Along the way, stop at the Main Town’s historic sights, the waterfront, Brzeźno beach or Oliwa Zoo. Hewelion is an invitation to discover places beyond the most obvious tourist route.

Practical information

Figures in public space can be viewed free of charge and usually around the clock. If a figure stands inside a venue, that venue’s opening hours and rules apply. The trail is outdoors, so wear comfortable shoes and check the weather. Look for current locations on the Hewelion website and Visit Gdańsk materials.
