Oporów Castle

Oporów Castle (roughly "OH-po-roof") near Kutno in central Poland is one of the best-preserved Gothic fortified residences in the country: a compact red-brick castle from the 1400s standing on an artificial island ringed by a moat, inside a romantic 19th-century landscape park. Since 1949 it has housed a museum of historic interiors, and its picture-book silhouette has made it a favorite with Polish filmmakers. It is a rewarding, crowd-free stop on a drive between Warsaw, Łódź and Toruń.

Where it is and how to get there

Oporów is a village in the Łódź region, about 15 km east of Kutno. Kutno sits on the A1 motorway, so the castle is roughly an hour's drive from Łódź and a little under two hours from Warsaw (and Warsaw Chopin Airport). Kutno is also a major rail junction with fast trains from Warsaw, but local transport onward to Oporów is limited, so a car or taxi is the practical choice.

History: a castle built for Poland's primate

The village is first recorded in 1363 as the seat of the Oporowski family. The castle grew out of an early-15th-century knight's tower on an island in a branch of the Słudwia River. Work was started by Mikołaj Oporowski, governor of the Łęczyca province, but the castle as you see it was completed in 1434–1449 for his son Władysław Oporowski, a leading diplomat at the Jagiellonian court who served as vice-chancellor, bishop of Włocławek and finally archbishop of Gniezno and Primate of Poland. He died at Oporów in 1453.

Later owners included the Tarnowski family in the 17th century and the Sołłohub family in the 18th, followed by a string of 19th-century landowners. Remarkably, successive remodelings changed little: Baroque windows, Neoclassical stucco, a small 1840s annex in the courtyard and a Neo-Gothic gateway. After World War II the castle was nationalized, and the museum opened in 1949.

Things to see

• The castle itself: a residential wing, a corner tower topped with a Gothic finial, a semicircular bastion with a chapel upstairs and a defensive wall around a tiny cobbled courtyard.
• Period interiors illustrating Polish noble culture from the 16th to the early 20th century, including 18th-century portraits of the Sołłohub family, early-19th-century mirrors, dueling pistols and English Shelton faience.
• The landscape park with canals, ponds and the moat, plus two 19th-century pavilions, the Neo-Gothic House and the Swiss House. The museum also rents guest rooms.
• Film locations: the castle appeared in "The Canterville Ghost" (1967), the series "Knights and Robbers" (1984) and the historical drama "Crown of the Kings" (2017), among others.

A visit to the interiors and courtyard takes about an hour; add time for a walk around the park. Labels are mainly in Polish, so a translation app helps.

Opening hours and tickets (as of October 2026)

• Hours: open year-round, daily 10:00–16:00; from May 1 to September 30 the castle stays open until 17:00 on Saturdays and Sundays. Last entry is 30 minutes before closing.
• Winter 2026/27: the standard 10:00–16:00 schedule applies. Closed on November 1 and 11, December 24, 25 and 31, January 1 and 6, Holy Saturday, Easter Sunday and Corpus Christi.
• Tickets: PLN 25 standard, PLN 18 reduced; a guided tour for groups of up to 40 costs PLN 100. Admission is free on Mondays (except Easter Monday), though guided tours are not guaranteed that day.

Is it worth visiting?

Yes, if you enjoy authentic medieval architecture without the crowds of Malbork or Wawel. Oporów is small, so it pairs best with other sights: the Pauline monastery and St. Martin's Church in the village (founded by the castle's builder in 1453), the royal castle in Łęczyca and the Romanesque collegiate church in Tum, a short drive south.
