Bernardine Church in Łęczyca

From the outside the white Baroque Bernardine church on ul. Poznańska in Łęczyca looks modest, but inside it hides one of the finest Rococo interiors in the region: illusionistic paintings by Brother Walenty Żebrowski from 1762–1763 and a full set of altars from the Kalisz workshop of Franz Eytner. The church of the Immaculate Conception (St Joseph is its second patron) was built in 1636–1643 and has also been a parish church since 1981. Its theatrum sacrum interior ranks among the most beautiful in the whole Bernardine province.

History: from a widow's foundation to dissolution

The friary was founded by Dorota Piwo of Otolin, widow of a Płock court official, who bought land for the friars outside the town walls by the Poznań Gate. Archbishop Jan Wężyk approved the foundation in 1631, and on 24 August 1632 the first Bernardines moved into a wooden friary. The brick church was consecrated on 10 September 1652, but in 1655 the Swedes occupied the friary, and King John Casimir's troops launched their assault on the town from here. After the damage, the church was consecrated again in 1686, and the friary was rebuilt after fires in 1737 and 1743. During the January Uprising the guardian allowed insurgents to take their oath in the church, and one friar commanded a unit – in reprisal the Tsarist authorities dissolved the friary in 1864. The Bernardines returned only in 1946, after the Jesuits who had looked after the church between the wars.

• Walenty Żebrowski's murals – illusionistic paintings on the vault and walls by the Bernardine lay-brother painter.
• High altar and six side altars – together with the pulpit and organ case, made in Kalisz in 1764–1766.
• Two images of the Virgin in the high altar – a 17th-century Immaculate Conception and an Our Lady of Częstochowa from 1887.

Did you know

In the 17th century Łęczyca was an important venue for the regional assemblies of the nobility (sejmiki), and their sessions were moved from the parish church to the Bernardines. It was not always peaceful: the church was twice desecrated by bloodshed during brawls. The foundress died on 3 February 1640; her handwritten Polish deed of 1639 survives in the friary's Latin chronicle.
