Bernardine Church in Łęczyca

The Bernardine Church and Monastery in Łęczyca is a Gothic church whose present building was consecrated in 1425 and transformed in the Baroque period. The Church of St Andrew the Apostle is one of Łęczyca’s oldest surviving religious buildings. Its location on Poznańska Street makes it easy to combine with the royal castle and a walk through the historic centre.

Architecture and chapels

The church is a brick, three-aisled basilica with a lower presbytery. Its Baroque façade, buttresses and furnishings show how the medieval building changed across the centuries. Inside, look for the domed Chapel of Our Lady, founded in the 17th century by Jakub Szczawiński, as well as the chapels of Christ Crucified and the Sacred Heart. The high altar is dedicated to St Andrew.

The Bernardine story

The Bernardines settled in Łęczyca in the 17th century, and their monastery and church became an important part of the town’s religious history. The complex survived wars and rebuilding while retaining its sacred function. It is particularly rewarding for visitors interested in the combination of Gothic structure, Baroque decoration and a living monastic tradition.
