Collegiate church in Tum

The Archcollegiate Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary and St Alexius in Tum near Łęczyca is a monumental Romanesque church built between 1141 and 1161. It is considered the largest surviving Romanesque building in Poland and has been a Historic Monument since 2022. Its massive walls and twin towers make it one of central Poland’s most important historic sites.

History and architecture

The church was founded on the initiative of Duchess Salomea of Berg. The three-aisled basilica has a transept, an apse-ended chancel, galleries and a defensive character that gives it the appearance of a fortress. Poland’s first synod was held here in 1180. The church was damaged, among other times, in 1294 and 1331, and later rebuilt in Gothic and Baroque forms. Second World War damage led to post-war reconstruction, which restored its Romanesque character.

What to see in Tum

Walk around the church to appreciate its stone walls, towers, Romanesque details and portal. Inside, later alterations and furnishings connected with the veneration of the Virgin Mary and St Alexius have survived.

Visitor information

During the tourist season, from early May to mid-October, visits are possible Wednesday–Saturday from 10:00 to 18:00; on Sundays between services and from 13:15 to 18:00. Mondays and Tuesdays are closed to visitors. Outside the season, groups can arrange a visit in advance at +48 793 760 107 or mdktum@gmail.com.
