Łęczyca Peasant Farmstead Open-Air Museum

On the road from Łęczyca to Tum, in the village of Kwiatkówek, stands a thatched farmstead that preserves the rural world of the Łęczyca region around 1900. Its oldest resident is a wooden post mill built in 1820 – older than the period the other buildings recreate. The Łęczyca Peasant Farmstead is a branch of the Archaeological and Ethnographic Museum in Łódź and a natural add-on to a visit to Romanesque Tum.

History: an open-air museum built to one plan

The idea came up at the end of 2009, and the museum was built in 2011–2013. From the outset it was part of the project "Tum – the Pearl of the Romanesque Route", linking the stronghold and collegiate church in Tum with the folk culture of the area. The houses and farm buildings are faithful reconstructions of the architecture typical of the Łęczyca area from the second half of the 19th to the early 20th century. The exceptions are three buildings with a past of their own: the restored windmill from 1820, an oil mill from the mid-20th century containing much older parts, and a smithy from the early 20th century.

What to see

• The clay cottage – the farmhouse, with an interior recreating a rural family home of the late 1930s.
• The livestock building with its peat shed, the barn, the earth cellar and the dung heap – the whole logic of an old farm in one yard.
• A sweep well and a wayside shrine.
• The post mill, oil mill and smithy – the section devoted to village industry and crafts.
• A potter's kiln and a bread oven, used during demonstrations.

Did you know?

The museum is meant to be a "living" place: it hosts workshops, demonstrations with local craftspeople and folk festivals, and the museum also stages art events in Kwiatkówek, such as a painting biennale. A post mill is a type of windmill whose entire body turns on a wooden post to face the sails into the wind – in Kwiatkówek you can see this construction up close.

Tripto tip

The museum is open Tuesday to Sunday: April–September 11:00–18:00, October 10:00–17:00; tickets are sold until 30 minutes before closing. A standard ticket costs PLN 24, a reduced one PLN 18, and children under 7 enter free (as of October 2026). On Tuesdays entry is free from 12:00 to 17:00, but the windmill is closed that day. You can pay by card or cash; groups should book by phone. Allow about an hour, then drive a few minutes to Tum – to the stronghold run by the same museum and to the Romanesque collegiate church. Holders of a valid Łódź Agglomeration Railway (ŁKA) ticket pay the reduced price for a standard ticket.
