Szczyrk Mountain Resort

Szczyrk Mountain Resort (say "shchirk") is the largest ski area in Szczyrk and one of the biggest in Poland, spread across the slopes of Mały Skrzyczne (1,211 m / 3,973 ft) in the Silesian Beskids. A 10-seat gondola and three six-seat chairlifts serve a network of runs for every level, linked to the neighboring Skrzyczne area. It is the most modern ski resort within easy reach of Kraków and Katowice, and a solid answer to "is it worth skiing in Poland?"

Where it is and how to get there

Szczyrk is a mountain town about 17 km (11 mi) south of Bielsko-Biała in southern Poland. By car it is roughly 1.5 hours from Katowice Airport and around 2 hours from Kraków, depending on traffic – weekend mornings in winter can be slow. Without a car, take a train to Bielsko-Biała Główna and switch to a Komunikacja Beskidzka bus; buses stop right at the two base areas, Szczyrk Gondola and Szczyrk Solisko.

The main base is at Salmopolska 53B. Parking there is free: lots P1 (about 230 spaces, with a 60 kW CCS charger for electric cars) and P2 (about 290), plus P3 at Czyrna (about 150) and a park-and-ride at Skalite (about 130). Buses and RVs are not allowed in P1–P3.

A short history

Coal mines from the Upper Silesian industrial region built the first lifts here in the late 1960s and 1970s. Decades of land disputes left the area half-closed in the 2000s, until Slovak operator Tatry Mountain Resorts – owner of Jasná in Slovakia – bought the operating company in March 2014. It replaced the old lifts with a gondola and high-speed six-seat chairs and rebranded the old Czyrna-Solisko area as Szczyrk Mountain Resort.

The skiing

The operator advertises more than 20 km (12 mi) of runs, including about 4 km of floodlit slopes for night skiing. Other sources list 18 runs, two of them local legends:

• Bieńkula – a black run and one of the toughest in the Beskids,
• Golgota – a red run whose name ("Golgotha") dates from the days before grooming.

The A1 gondola climbs from the Szczyrk Gondola base to Hala Skrzyczeńska meadow at about 1,000 m, the hub for runs toward Solisko, Wierch Pośredni, Zbójnicka Kopa and Mały Skrzyczne. Beginners should head for the Zbójnicka Kopa lift and its gentler run. A 100,000 m³ reservoir on the meadow feeds hundreds of snow guns.

A shared lift pass with the neighboring COS Skrzyczne area and Beskid Sport Arena covers close to 40 km (25 mi) of slopes, and the SMR and COS runs have been linked in both directions since the 2018/19 season.

Families, lessons and breaks

Szczyrk Ski School runs a beginner zone called MAXILAND and a kids' program (Akademia Misia Maxa). Instruction in English is worth requesting when you book. For lunch, Kuflonka restaurant on Hala Skrzyczeńska has a sun terrace with mountain views. New for winter 2026/27, the Salamandra Alpine Coaster at the meadow is set to run in winter too.

Tips for a good day:

• arrive before the lifts open on weekends and during Polish winter school holidays,
• buy passes online through Gopass rather than at the ticket office,
• check the weather on top – wind and fog can change conditions fast.

Lift passes, prices and opening hours

As of October 2026, Gopass SKI season passes for 2026/27 are on sale. They cover nine Tatry Mountain Resorts areas in Slovakia, Czechia, Austria and Poland and include free night skiing and free parking in Szczyrk. The opening date and day-pass prices for winter 2026/27 have not been announced yet. For orientation only: in 2025/26 a one-day adult pass cost about PLN 219 (children about PLN 154). Prices are in Polish złoty (PLN), and online prices depend on how early you buy.

Outside the ski season (October 2026) the gondola runs Friday to Sunday, 9 am–5 pm, alongside the bike park and coaster. Dogs are allowed on the gondola and the chairlift.

Summer and nearby

Since 2018 the gondola has also run in summer. Szczyrk Bike Park by TREK has about 16 km of enduro trails, and hiking trails lead to Skrzyczne and Malinowska Skała. Nearby, Skrzyczne (1,257 m) – the highest peak of the Silesian Beskids – is home to the COS ski area. The Salmopolska Pass is just up the road.
