Castles
Kórnik, Greater Poland
Kórnik Castle (say "KOOR-neek") is a fairy-tale neo-Gothic residence surrounded by water, about 20 km southeast of Poznań in western Poland. Its walls have stood for almost 600 years without ever being destroyed, and today they hold a museum and one of Poland's oldest research libraries, with a historic arboretum next door. If you are looking for things to do near Poznań, it is the easiest and most rewarding half-day trip from the city.
The first brick seat was built in the first half of the 15th century for Mikołaj Górka, and the oldest written record, from 1426, mentions repairs to its roof. Over the centuries the castle passed through several noble families – the Górka, Czarnkowski, Grudziński, Działyński and Zamoyski – and was rebuilt many times, but unusually for Poland it was never wrecked by war. In 1574 it hosted Henri de Valois, the French prince elected King of Poland, on his way to his coronation.
In the 18th century Teofila Działyńska turned the fortified house into a Baroque palace with gardens and fountains. The look you see today came in the 19th century, when Count Tytus Działyński remodeled it in an English neo-Gothic style, drawing on designs by the Berlin architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel. Tytus also founded the Kórnik Library in 1826, so 2026 marks its 200th anniversary.
The last private owner, Władysław Zamoyski, gave the castle and its collections to the Polish nation in 1924. Since 1953 it has been cared for by the Polish Academy of Sciences, and since 2011 the castle-and-park complex has been listed as a Historic Monument of Poland, the country's highest national heritage status.
The rooms display furniture, paintings, sculpture, porcelain, silverware, arms and coins collected by the Działyński family and Zamoyski. The showpiece is the Moorish Hall, inspired by the Court of the Lions in Spain's Alhambra and originally used as a library. The library collections include manuscripts and early printed books, among them items linked to Chopin, the poet Adam Mickiewicz and Napoleon.
Kórnik's favorite legend is the White Lady: Teofila Działyńska is said to step out of her portrait, painted by the Prussian court painter Antoine Pesne, and wander through the park at night. Kids love hunting for her in the castle rooms.
Before you leave, walk around the outside. From the water side you get the best view of the pale facade against the red-brick tower, and the arched brick bridge is the classic photo spot.
Tytus Działyński reshaped Teofila's formal garden into a landscape park, which grew into today's Kórnik Arboretum, run by the Institute of Dendrology of the Polish Academy of Sciences. It also celebrates 200 years in 2026. The arboretum is ticketed separately and keeps its own hours, with the main season from April to October; check prices on the institute's website (idpan.poznan.pl).
Good to know: strollers are not allowed inside because of the historic floors, and there is no place to leave them. An elevator is available for visitors with disabilities – ask the staff.
The simplest way is by car from Poznań, about 20 km on the S11 expressway. There is a small paid parking lot by the castle (around 30 spaces) and a free lot at the Prowent building, about 400 m away. Buses run from Poznań's main bus station next to the central train station and from the Rondo Rataje stop. The train is not a good option: Kórnik's station is about 5 km from the castle. Poznań itself has an international airport and direct trains from Berlin and Warsaw.
Yes – especially if you pair it with Rogalin Palace, another Historic Monument a short drive west, famous for its ancient oaks and art gallery. Spring and fall are the best seasons for the arboretum; summer brings the longest castle hours.
