Lake Kórnik

Lake Kórnik is a narrow ribbon lake in the heart of Kórnik, part of the glacial Kórnik–Zaniemyśl Channel. It covers nearly 92 ha and is up to 6 m deep, and along its eastern shore runs a promenade of about 3 km leading to the castle, the arboretum and a bench dedicated to Wisława Szymborska. In summer the OAZA-Błonie lido operates here, with horseshoe-shaped jetties.

A lake between town and forest

To the east and south the lake is lined by the houses of Kórnik, Prowent and Bnin, while the western shore is covered by the experimental forest of the Institute of Dendrology of the Polish Academy of Sciences. According to the lido operator, the lake has kept its natural shoreline, whose reeds shelter ducks, swans and gulls. In 2021 a footbridge opened linking the centre of Kórnik with the beach on the far side, shortening the walk between the castle and Błonie.

OAZA-Błonie lido

The lido lies on the north-western shore. The jetties form a horseshoe: the two sections perpendicular to the shore measure 31.98 m and 24.60 m, and the parallel section closing them 54.12 m. The beach runs for more than 50 m; it is mostly grassy, with fresh sand spread right by the water. There are straw parasols, sunloungers, showers, a changing room and toilets, and lifeguards are on duty in the summer season.

Things to do

• Hire equipment at Wodna Przystań: pedalos, kayaks, SUP boards and electric boats.
• Take a trip on a white-fleet boat, which according to the operator sails from the jetty by the lido to the castle.
• Try wakeboarding at Wake Park Kórnik next to the beach.
• Walk the "Health Trail" – a 3.8 km walking and cycling route with 14 exercise stations, starting at the lido.
• Stroll the promenade along the eastern shore past a viewing terrace, the market square, the castle and the arboretum to Jeziorna Street in Bnin.

Did you know?

Along the promenade stands a bench dedicated to Wisława Szymborska, who was born in the area, with plaques bearing her poems. As late as the 1950s, the Zwierzyniec Forest on the lakeshore was the last site in Greater Poland of the snail Cepaea vindobonensis. Kórnik, with its castle, arboretum, Kórnik Library and Gothic All Saints' Church, has the status of a national Monument of History.

For a beach day, choose a date in season when the guarded lido and the rental are open; out of season Błonie is good for a walk. A full loop along the promenade and back over the footbridge takes about 1.5–2 hours at a relaxed pace, with a coffee stop at one of the waterside cafés. Near the lido there are three signposted car parks and a four-star campsite. Check the operator's current season dates, boat trips and water-quality notices before you go.
