Kraków Old Town (Stare Miasto) is the medieval core of Poland's former royal capital: a compact grid of streets, churches and university colleges wrapped in a ring of parkland, centered on one of the largest market squares in Europe. Together with Wawel Hill and the Kazimierz district it forms the UNESCO World Heritage Site "Historic Centre of Kraków", one of the very first sites ever inscribed. If you have only one day in southern Poland, this is where to spend it.
Kraków (pronounced roughly KRAH-koof) lies in southern Poland, roughly 300 km by road south of Warsaw. Kraków John Paul II International Airport in Balice is around 15 km from the center, and a direct train runs from the airport to Kraków Główny, the main station. From the station you walk into the Old Town in about 10 minutes. Trains from Warsaw take roughly two and a half hours, and many visitors combine Kraków with Auschwitz-Birkenau (a separate day trip of about 70 km). The area inside the Planty ring has restricted car traffic, so if you arrive by car, use a paid parking lot outside the center or a Park & Ride and take the tram in.
The street grid you walk today was laid out in 1257, when Kraków received a charter under Magdeburg law. Planners created a regular checkerboard of streets around a main square of roughly 200 by 200 meters (about 10 acres). Kraków was the seat of Polish kings until the late 16th century, and its merchants grew rich on trade between the Baltic and Hungary. In the 19th century most of the city walls were demolished and replaced by the Planty, a park about 4 km long laid out in 1822–1830. Only the northern stretch of fortifications survived, with the Florian Gate and the Barbican.
In 1978 the Historic Centre of Kraków was among the first places added to the World Heritage List; the protected core today covers almost 150 hectares. Poland now has 18 World Heritage Sites — the most recent, the modernist center of Gdynia, was inscribed in July 2026.
One full day covers the essentials. Start at the Barbican, walk through the Florian Gate down Floriańska Street to the Main Square, listen to the bugle call, and step into St. Mary's. Continue to Collegium Maius, then follow Grodzka and Kanonicza streets — the prettiest part of the Royal Route — to Wawel Hill. Come back to the square after dark, when the façades are lit. With two days, add the museums and a slow loop of the Planty, then cross into Kazimierz.
Yes. From late November to early January a Christmas market usually fills the Main Square (the city announces the exact 2026/27 dates — check before you travel), and on the first Thursday of December local craftsmen bring their glittering szopki, traditional Kraków nativity scenes, to the Mickiewicz monument for an annual competition. Expect cold days, shorter museum hours and far fewer crowds.
Nearby. Wawel Castle and Cathedral are a 10–15 minute walk south. Kazimierz, the historic Jewish quarter, is just beyond, and the Wieliczka Salt Mine, another World Heritage Site, is about 15 km away.
