The Dominican Basilica in Kraków – the Basilica of the Holy Trinity on Stolarska Street – is a soaring Gothic brick church just a few minutes from the Main Market Square. Dominican friars have been based here since 1222, and the church is also a shrine to St. Hyacinth (Jacek Odrowąż, say "YAH-tsek") and Our Lady of the Rosary. Come for the Gothic cloisters lined with old tombstones, the richly decorated side chapels and a free museum displaying some of the oldest stained glass in Poland.
In 1222 Dominican friars arrived from Bologna, led by St. Hyacinth. Bishop Iwo Odrowąż handed them the Holy Trinity church – part timber, part masonry – and moved its parish role to the new St. Mary's Church on the Market Square. The church was consecrated on 12 March 1223.
After the Mongol invasion of 1241, work began on a new Gothic church and friary. It started life as a three-aisled hall church and was remodeled into a basilica around 1400. Disaster came with the Great Fire of Kraków in 1850, which gutted the interior and brought down the nave vault. Rebuilding, led by architect Teofil Żebrawski, lasted from 1853 to 1884, when the church was reconsecrated – so much of what you see inside today is Gothic Revival. Pope Pius XII made it a minor basilica in 1957.
Opened in late 2022, the Museum of the Polish Dominican Province occupies about 500 m² on two levels of Romanesque and early modern rooms. Highlights include:
Admission is free, but you must book a free ticket for a specific date and time in advance on the friary website. Opening hours are not published there; the museum phone (+48 694 480 689) is answered only during opening hours.
Yes – it is free, central and usually calmer than the Main Square churches. Art lovers should book the museum; anyone interested in medieval Kraków will enjoy the cloisters. In Advent and over Christmas there are more services and less time for sightseeing, so aim for a weekday morning.
The basilica stands on Dominikański Square, about 3–5 minutes on foot from the Main Market Square. The nearest tram stops are Plac Wszystkich Świętych and Poczta Główna. Kraków Airport has a train link to Kraków Główny station, around 15 minutes' walk away. The Old Town is a restricted, paid parking zone.
