Termy Mszczonów Thermal Baths

Termy Mszczonów (say "TEHR-mih MSHCHO-noof") is a small municipal thermal pool complex in the town of Mszczonów, about 40 km southwest of Warsaw. Its pools are filled with untreated geothermal water from a well more than 1,600 meters deep, and two thermal pools stay open all year. It is a low-key, budget-friendly alternative to big water parks, and a pleasant winter half-day trip from Warsaw for a soak in warm mineral water, plus a sauna and salt grotto. Don't confuse it with the big Suntago water park, about 5 km away in Wręcza, which is a separate venue with its own prices.

Getting there

The complex is at Warszawska 52, Mszczonów. From Warsaw, the easiest route is by car along the S8 expressway toward Wrocław, roughly 40 minutes in normal traffic; there is parking on site. Public transport is possible but slower, so check regional bus timetables before relying on it. Warsaw Chopin Airport is the nearest international gateway.

The thermal water

The water comes from the Mszczonów IG-1 well, drilled in 1997 into Lower Cretaceous sandstone. According to the operator, the well is 1,602.5 m deep and the water emerges at about 42°C (108°F); in the pools it ranges from 26 to 34°C (79–93°F). It is low in minerals (around 460 mg per liter), dominated by calcium and magnesium bicarbonates, with a pH of 7.6. Because of its iron content, it is brownish-green and slightly cloudy, and the operator advises against white or very light swimwear. The same well also feeds the town's geothermal heating system.

What's there

The complex is run by the town's sports and recreation center (OSiR) and has five pools:

• two year-round thermal pools, the main draw in winter,
• a leisure pool with water slides,
• a sports pool,
• a children's pool.

There are also separate men's and women's saunas, an outdoor salt grotto, hot tubs and, in winter, an ice rink. In summer, a 10,000 m² grassy beach, beach volleyball courts and a playground open up, and there are pitches for camper vans.

• September 1 – June 30: daily 9 a.m.–9 p.m.
• July 1 – August 31: daily 9 a.m.–10 p.m.
• Closed November 1, December 24–25, January 1 and Easter Sunday; open 9 a.m.–2 p.m. on December 31.

Prices are in Polish złoty (PLN) and remarkably low by Western standards:

• Adults: PLN 17 for 1 hour, PLN 32 for 2 hours, PLN 45 for 3 hours on weekdays; PLN 19/36/51 on weekends and holidays.
• Reduced (students up to 26, seniors over 65, pensioners, people with disabilities): PLN 14/26/36, weekends PLN 16/30/42.
• Extra time: PLN 0.30 per minute (PLN 0.35 at weekends).
• Sauna or salt grotto: PLN 10 for 2 hours per room.
• Ice rink: PLN 15 per hour (PLN 17 at weekends); skate rental PLN 10.
• Children under 3 with an adult go free.

Summer (June 1 – August 31): adults PLN 22 (1 h), PLN 42 (2 h), PLN 60 (3 h) or PLN 114 (6 h) on weekdays, PLN 24/46/66/126 on weekends and holidays; reduced PLN 17/32/45/84 (weekends PLN 19/36/51/96).

Is it worth visiting?

If you want warm water and quiet rather than big slides, yes. The much larger Suntago water park is about 5 km away in Wręcza; Termy Mszczonów is the calmer, cheaper option. Combine it with nearby Żyrardów and its historic 19th-century linen-factory town. Allow two to three hours and pack a dark swimsuit.
