Church of Our Lady of Consolation in Żyrardów

The Church of Our Lady of Consolation in Żyrardów is a Neo-Gothic church built in 1900–1903 to a design by Józef Pius Dziekoński. Its two tall towers and huge brick body reflect the industrial origins of a town that grew around textile works. It is one of Żyrardów’s most distinctive landmarks.

A church built from three million bricks

Construction was supported by the factory owners, the Dittrich family, Count Feliks Sobański, and factory workers and officials. Around three million bricks from Radziejowice were used. Dziekoński’s design gives the church an almost cathedral-like scale, with tall towers, elaborate gables and rich architectural detail.

Stained glass and the factory town

The interior retains original Art Nouveau stained glass, including floral compositions based on designs by Jan Gumowski. A particularly telling window shows the Christ Child holding a spindle, a direct reference to Żyrardów’s textile tradition. The church also preserves a Rieger organ and a high altar containing relics of St Roman and St Victoria.

Practical information

The church stands on Narutowicza Street in the centre, close to the historic factory settlement. It is an active parish; its website lists Masses at 07:00, 07:30, 17:00 and 18:00 on weekdays, and at 07:00, 09:00, 10:30, 12:00, 17:00 and 19:00 on Sundays. Check the current schedule before sightseeing. Allow 30–45 minutes for the interior and exterior.
