Bydgoszcz was granted its town charter in 1346 and grew rich shipping grain down the Brda and the Vistula to Gdańsk. The Bydgoszcz Canal, opened in 1774, linked the Vistula and Oder river systems, and as Prussian Bromberg the city became an industrial centre — which is why its best sights today are mills, granaries, locks and other industrial heritage. The Old Town, Mill Island, the Opera Nova and 'Bydgoszcz Venice' are all within a few hundred metres of each other along the river.
Below you'll find the ten places we'd put on a first visit, a one-day route, a two-day plan with an optional day trip to Toruń, how to get in from the airport and station, and the full catalogue of Bydgoszcz attractions on tripto.pl. Opening hours and prices are on each attraction page — in winter the water tram doesn't run and most museums close on Mondays.
Our picks for a first visit — each with a short reason why.
