Toruń, Kuyavian-Pomeranian
The Nicolaus Copernicus House in Toruń (say "TOR-oon-y") is a museum set inside two late-Gothic merchant houses on Kopernika Street, a short walk from the Old Town Market Square. Local tradition links the address with the birth of the astronomer who put the Sun, not the Earth, at the center of the known universe. Inside, medieval rooms meet holograms, a 3D cinema and a star show under the original roof beams, making it one of the top things to do in Toruń.
Toruń sits on the Vistula River in north-central Poland, in the Kuyavian-Pomeranian region. It is a popular stop between Warsaw and Gdańsk: count on roughly 2.5–3 hours by train from Warsaw and around 2 hours by car from Gdańsk via the A1 motorway. The nearest airport is Bydgoszcz, about 50 km (30 miles) away; most international visitors fly into Warsaw or Gdańsk instead.
The house stands inside Toruń's medieval Old Town, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, about 200 m from the main square. From Toruń Główny, the main train station on the south bank, it is a 20–25 minute walk across the road bridge or a short bus ride. Driving into the Old Town is restricted and street parking fills up fast, so the easiest plan is to leave the car in a paid lot on the edge of the historic center and walk.
Copernicus was born in Toruń on February 19, 1473 — that much is certain. Which house his family lived in is still debated. In the 19th century the city's mayor used a 1450 list of burghers' duties to argue that the astronomer's father lived on what is now Kopernika Street. A 1980s study pointed to number 15. Some historians, however, believe the family's grander home on the Old Town Market Square (number 36, demolished in the 19th century) is the more likely birthplace.
The museum is open about this uncertainty, and that honesty is part of the appeal. What you are visiting is a pair of genuine 15th-century Hanseatic townhouses connected with the Copernicus family and the city where the scientist grew up before studying in Kraków and Italy.
It is worth pausing across the street first. The two neighboring facades, with their tall stepped gables, red brick and pale lace-like tracery, are among the most photographed buildings in the Old Town.
The museum has operated here since 1973 as a branch of the Toruń Regional Museum, and a major modernization in 2017–2018 turned it into an interactive experience. Highlights include:
Films run at fixed times through the day, so check the schedule at the ticket desk and plan your visit around a screening.
Yes, especially if you are interested in the history of science or traveling with kids, who tend to enjoy the hands-on displays and the star show. Allow about an hour for the exhibition and add 20–30 minutes if you want to see a film.
The audio guide is available in English (as well as Polish and German) and includes an audio-described version; the museum website also has an English version. On weekends, guided tours start at 12:00 and 13:15, so ask at the desk which language the guide will use. This is a medieval building on several levels, so if you use a wheelchair or stroller, call ahead to confirm what is accessible.
Exhibition tickets cost 33 PLN full price and 28 PLN reduced (prices are in Polish złoty). The 3D film is charged separately and the audio guide costs 15 PLN. Entry to the permanent exhibitions is free on Thursdays, which can mean longer lines. No family ticket is listed. You can buy tickets online through the regional museum's booking site, but individual visits cannot be reserved — just turn up during opening hours.

In autumn 2025, archaeologists uncovered wooden structures in the courtyard — the remains of an old driveway and a timber-lined well. The museum plans to display them in an underground gallery, but construction is expected to take at least two years.
Within a few hundred meters you'll find the Old Town Hall with its viewing tower, the Museum of Toruń History, the Toruń Gingerbread Museum (gingerbread has been the city's signature treat for centuries) and the Copernicus statue on the main square. Combine them with a stroll along the Vistula riverside boulevard for an easy, rewarding day.
