Toruń grew rich as a Hanseatic river port on the Vistula, and unlike many Polish cities it came through the 20th century with its medieval core largely intact: Gothic brick churches, merchants' houses, river gates and the ruins of a Teutonic Knights' castle. The Old and New Towns together have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997. Nicolaus Copernicus was born here in 1473, and the city has been baking its famous gingerbread for centuries.
Below you'll find the ten places we'd put on any first-timer's list, a one-day route, a two-day plan with an optional day trip to Bydgoszcz, how to get here and the full catalogue of Toruń attractions on tripto.pl. Opening hours and prices live on each attraction page — from October to April most museums close at 4 pm and are shut on Mondays, so check before you go.
Our picks for a first visit — each with a short reason why.
